Has anyone encountered information that indicates whether or not the combat rear sight V notch on rifles on which the Corps installed the new sights was enlarged to accomodate the wider front sight blade?
I never needed to widen the notch on my 03, when I installed a set of Marine Corp sights.
The real question should be,
Were Marine Corp sights ever used in combat?
I think they were just used so the Marines would not have hold off problems in rattle battle.
Yes, I have.SA #993896 6-18 bl. A friend of mine has had this one for over 40 years, long before 03's were so popular. It has the front and rear USMC sights and there is a small number 35 stamped next to the wide battle notch.JB knows about this one, although no information exists as to why or when this mark was done,I haven't seen annother like it.Lee W.P.S. The leaf spring has a notch, like a coin slot, cut through the hole in the spring.(I think this is annother USMC trait.)
The battle sight notch works fine with the '03 I have with USMC sights. I was fortunate enough to get USGI so I figure they were made with the unmodified battle sight notch in mind. The battle sight notch is a bit shallow but I think it works a lot better with the USMC front sight than the thin blade which honestly I find a beast to acquire.
to answer the question of were they used in combat?
look at the second Marine Raider pic, that Mike posted, the 03 he has is packing the larg sight hood, id bet the number 10 sight is under it.
