the CMP M1 Special Request.

for the longest time i have been wanting one... in a few weeks i will have the means to purchase one of these pieces of history from the CMP.

has anybody recently purchased any M1 Garands from the CMP? i only ask because i was told a while ago that you could make a request and if it was not too outrageous they would do their best to fill it. you see, i want to get a Service Grade Springfield Armory that could possibly be from the WWII era. but nowhere on the form did it have a spot to make a special note... i imagine i can email them and ask?

either way i would like an M1 and i will be happy with whatever i get. but it never hurts to ask.

any advice?

You can add a small post-it to your order form with your request on it. However, keep it brief and simple, and don't ask for the impossible, like a WWII Springfield M1 with the original barrel. The CMP folks filling the orders only have the serial numbers to work with, so asking them for something that would require them to pull a rifle and look it over would be totally out-of-the-question.

An option would be to visit either of the stores and pick one off the racks by yourself. That way you get to see what you are buying. However, the mail-order demand for Service Grade rifles is so great that there are NO Service Grade rifles in the stores at this time.

Any WWII Service Grade will most likely have had the barrel replaced by now.

I have ordered 15 in the last 2yrs and got 2 ww2 receivered garands either by luck or someone saw my name a few to many times and gave me a good brake.
they also came with many ww2 parts but no ww2 wood or barrels. I'm not complaining at all. you could order a field grade winchester(they are all ww2)
but are more $$$$ and mixed parts but i am known to like m1's that have seen some action. remember collecting should be fun!

I ordered a Springfield SG about 5 months ago. The receiver was a 1943 build. Being from Springfield, MA, I was pretty happy.

i would be happy with just the serial number being from WWII... i understand that the barrel is probably going to have been replaced along with other parts... i have gotten used to the idea since i own two enfields that have both been re-barreled. and as far as the wood... the ones i see are almost always in rough shape... again that does not bother me (i have a lee enfield mkIII and the reciever is stamped 1930... the wood has "character") i can always get a new stock from CMP.

i am just wondering if they still take those special requests... im not asking for the sun or the moon... just a serial number from SA lower than 3.8 million (thats WWII era right?)

if only i did not live several thousand miles away (Montana here) i would go and hand pick one myself.

I purchased a HRA/service grade recently.
I sent the info and paper work and they got it on 5/14, (they acknowledged with an email.)
On the site it said 120-180 days for delivery.(longer than normal)
Well I got it FedEx overnight delivery on 5/28. They keep you informed on the status as far as when it ships and when it should arrive.
(You do need an adult to sign for the delivery.)
I could'nt have picked a nicer rifle if I had gone to Anniston and picked it out myself.
I'm not sure what you want as a "special request", but they have a notation that they do not go through their stock looking for certain things(luck of the draw), however, like I said, they picked out a great one for me. They do a great job and check all to make sure they work safely.
Make sure you read all the info on the grade and what is involved in the process, so you won't expect something they can't give you.
With an SA, I think you'll probably get mostly SA parts since they were more common at the arsenals.

Just add a sticky note requesting a serial number below 3.4 mil.
That is what I did last fall & they took care of me.
