The Good Old Days
On this day 74 years ago, I was a Radarman on a picket cruiser finishing up gunnery practice (AA & Shore bombardment) off Calebra, an island off Cuba. From there we were scheduled to proceed to the Panama Canal to join the Pacific Fleet in the invasion of Japan. After Paul Tibbits in the Enola Gay and Maj. Sweeny in Bock's car visited Japan (Hiroshima and Nagasaki) the trip was deemed unnecessary and we we were diverted back to Europe.

Mr. Cosign26 thank you for reminding me of one of the fine gentlemen who have shaped my life. I trust that you have helped many in a similar fashion.
An (long ago) employer of mine volunteered for Japanese invasion duty (after service in the Battle of the Atlantic & the Normandy invasion fleet) and was given home leave while his ship steamed to the Pacific Theatre.
He told me that the A- bombs saved him from court martial as he failed to report back to his ship...
He served in Corvettes and Cruisers...
I learned a lot from Mr. Rea J.
