One would hope the user survived but the projectiles penetration of the barrel seems the range was a short one and multiple so perhaps a heavy MG.

I'm not sure what the odds are that 3 rounds could strike an 18" long object about 1" in width perfectly in the center of the width from 2 different angles.....
Perhaps a bit of sensationalism hard to prove but that was what the first sentence said, my own take on it was the second sentence.
It does look like 30 cal. Probably a M91/30 or a MG firing that Russian caliber?
Dibs on the front swivel/barrel band.
