Very interesting, but fragile looking.
That sort of thing is way above my pay grade. (Sorry... I heard that somewhere by someone who was sidestepping a question).
Actually, I do think it is extremely interesting. Given that instrumentation of this era vastly exceeds the capability of that available during the development of the M-1, a careful hobbyist level examination of gas port pressure with popular factory hunting loads as well as handloads is at at least worthy of some exploration.
It is my understanding that the M-1 gas system was designed with a reserve of pressure sufficient to ensure positive operation under less than ideal conditions. Just thinking out loud, but one has to wonder what would have been the result if the gas plug had been designed to be adjustable as with the M-14.
