Now that's nice. I'm thinking if that's a walnut stock then the one on my thread may not be walnut, though the numbers all match. Unless mine got a newer stock and they put the whole ser# in instead of the last 3 when it was replaced? Once again nice wood nice over all.
I just looked at mine in the after pics on my thread page 2 and it has nice grain like walnut . The wood might just be 1899 as opposed to your 1915? German vs Swedish made?

This is the only M96 I have seen except for pictures and the M96 is a new type for me so I really didn't know that they were made out of various types of wood. I wouldn't say positively that mine is walnut although it looks like it, but I don't think I've ever seen a nicer stock on a military rifle.

GUTS, I think the 'swede' is one of the most beautiful and most definately accurate military surplus rifles ever made, I have three and wish i had three more; yours hands down has the nicest wood i've ever seen on on a '96; congrats on one beautiful rifle!

Walnut. The black streaking is due to minerals in the soil. They are very pretty stocks. I have several like that.

You are now hooked! You will love shooting the Swede. Buy some Privi (Aim Surplus has good prices) and reload after that. They will shoot lights out with the Nosler 140g CC.
I started with a M96 to shoot vintage bolt and now have 6 different Swedes.
