Thanks for sharing - nice rifle. I like your scope, too - which one is that?
The spotting scope looks like an M49 type. Designed way back around WW2 and used for decades.
It looks like a B&L scope sitting on a Al Freeland tripod & mount. Those mounts require a clamp to attach the scope. This scope appears just to be sitting on, not clamped to the mount. They are very good scopes.
Thanks for the post and Thank You For Your Service!
Originally they used a leather strap with a buckle to hold the scope on! Thanks so much for sharing. Tradition - it's a beautiful thing. CC
M49's are a pretty good scope. A friend of mine uses one regularly. It's no Kowa, but it's as good or better than my old Redfield. Some are Unertl built, IIRC.
The M14's were being issued towards the end of 1963 at Ft Leonard Wood, was issued TRW 1313921 with a Sept 63 TRW bbl during early 1964. All that I saw back then were TRW M14's with wood stocks, except for a few plastic (Gen Tire & Rubber) early stocks, also on TRW rifles.
We used the rubber boot blouse bands from the PX to hold the M49 to it's tripod. In Viet Nam I used a GP strap from a tool bag.
