It has:
-a brass bead sight
-6 rows of 29 holes
-the bayonet adapter sits against the barrel muzzle
-there are three spot welds attaching the heat shield to the bayonet adapter
-there are three barrel clamp screws
-it has 11888388 cast into the bayonet adapter. I may be off on the number as I am having a hard time reading it. It may be 11688388.

Sounds like it's for a Winchester model 1200
I assumed that it is for a Winchester 1200, but wasn't sure. I had a similar one, but it had another row of markings. I do not have it to take pictures. It is was offered to me for purchase, but I don't know a fair value. It is well used with a few dents, the finish on the sheet metal has browned and is missing the barrel clip that is mid way down the shield. Otherwise, it is complete and functional.
Doesn't the adapter for the 1200 also take the Garand bayonet as opposed to the old M-17 type?
No, there was one that did though. The originals for the 1200 series took the M 1917 bayonet and they made them new at Ontario knife...(and others I think too...)

I waded through a large number of ex-US shotguns; Win. 97s, 12s, a couple of 1200s, and, bizarrely, Mod 25 riot guns, Stevens 520s, 520-30s, heaps of 77Es, Rem 870s and a couple of Mod 10s, etc. that were recovered from a big warehouse in Viet Nam in 1995 and delivered to Australia just before the sky fell in on our gun laws. Some very prime goodies; never to be repeated.
The later M1917 bayonets were made by General Cutlery and Canadian Arsenal Ltd in the mid to late sixties
I remember that great find. Some made it here also, the guns ranged from as new to just about done in... I see the shroud you spoke of now...so it was a later type for the 77 (1200 series)Quote:
