I have a Japanese sword from WWII and I would love to know more about it. It is in fairly rough shape. I always understood it was a guys family family sword, but that may be myth.

I do not believe that there are many people here that read or understand Japanese, unfortunately, and so it is probably worth posting pictures of the whole sword.
It could be a lot older than WW2 if it was a "family sword".
i don't know if you visit Firearms Of The Rising Sun | Gunboards Forums there are people there who may help you with the translation.
Could also try these ppl just remember to thank them if they supply you the relevant information as they read the Kanji on my WWII Shin Gunto pic of it's tang.

I did some research at one time...these sites were helpful for what I was looking for (my father-in-laws WWII bring back "shin gunto").
Lots of info out there...this could easily be a separate hobby for someone interested enough.
