Quick look at a S'G' today on GB .
Looks like a pretty nice S'G' but.......
Safety gave me some pause...........

I have 2 S'G' but both have unmarked type II safeties.
Thought I had some pictures tucked away, but can't get past Photobucket's bombing raid to access my files at this time.
George currently has one on GB but even though it has the same letters, they're so far off compared to this one it's not worth the time to post it.
Is it the G that stands out the most ?
Along with the angles of the Prime marks ' ' ?
My 1.8M S'G' has an unmarked Type 2. I can recall others thinking they needed to find an E-S'G' to make their's correct. I'm sticking with the pitted one mine came with - the mag catch, too. - Bob

Checkout this crate I picked up from GB. I'll store something in it that I'll soon forget about.
Then be tearing a room or two apart looking for what ever I stored in it.

Yep, the one with the S-T-B style grease job is yours. Just noticed your TH has the circular style cut, and the alignment hole at the back is shallower. You'd better go pull it out to make sure! I like the new ammo box. Now you need to find a couple of unopened LC-52 spam cans with the same lot number. :cheers: - BobQuote:

I can put the GB auction up with all the pictures.
Described as varnished, but I believe they used a coat of Shellac.
I scatter crates, ammo cans, lockers and even a couple land mine crates among my displays..... but really do forget what is where when I store things in them.
Wife laughed at me when I opened it. Asked what was in it. I replied it's a empty box.

What struck me about your crate was that it's got exactly the same screw closures as a Greek HXP .303 crate I have. The Greeks may have recycled old US boxes.
I lose things all the time now. I'm afraid it's a sign of age :ugh: and having far too much 'stuff':)

This S'G' I'm watching/thinking about on GB (with the in question safety: (E-S'G')
Has a odd looking Barrel Band. I know these were used on some make of commercial Carbine......... But don't recall who it was that used them.
Any thoughts of which Company used these ?
I'm assuming it isn't a cut down Type III band since it isn't marked any where.
BTW... It's bid just over $1K with just under 24 hrs as I type this.
S'G' 3,6 mil, Type II Hi-wood stock with boxed S'G' and CC, With the large RSG letters in slingwell.
Inland 1-44 barrel. No Import stampings or any mention/sight of Rebuild/Depot/Armory markings.
Type I rear sight with Block S Flip.
Op slide, Flat bolt, Trigger housing and internals etc all S'G' marked.
S'G' Straight hammer with 22 coil spring. No pictures showing hammer strikes.
I've sent some questions but as of now no replies.

Charlie, S'G' ended production in December 1943. The last Inland barrels were December 1st 1943. Oh and the rear sight does not look to healthy.
I can never keep the dates correct when dealing with IR-IP, S'G' and SG.
Can say I've seen my share of S'G' and SG's with the Dovetail edges peened over instead of Chisel stake.
Also common to see that under the rear sight base on the receiver has been milled too deep on these.

The Barrel band is wrong , S'g' never used type 2 barrel bands . IBM , Rock-Ola , Inland , NPM , Winchester , used type 2 barrel bands towards the middle to end of production.
The Square S rear sight is USGI but I don't recall ever seeing one on a S'G' , you would be more likely to see a W-S'G' , B-SG or RG-SG at this serial number range .

Sq. S flip sometimes found on late SG carbines....... Not S'G'.
Now with this one I'd be nervous about trying to remove the Rear sight with the way the Dovetails are peened way over on the edges.
My luck............ they'd chip or bust.
Carbine sold for $1600.
Even with the commercial barrel band, repro safety and late D tip sling I thought it might be a good buy for a parts carbine.
Might have jumped on it had the barrel been original to the receiver.
But not worth $1600 to me as it was.
And never did find out anything about the Mag catch, Frt sight or any info/pictures of previous stake marks on the Dovetails.
But it was a good looking stock :clap:

Look at the picture of the right side of the rear sight.
The peened over Dovetails ?
Or the too deep milling on the receiver under the sight base ?

Look at the non recessed or crimped pin. The stake marks are, well not up to par shall we say. And yes the base is not right too. And the barrel band as described already just shouts out it's a SETH!!!!!!
So $1600 plus $40 shipping plus my FFL's transfer fee of $40...... total of $1680 for the wrong barrel, repro commercial type II ish barrel band, repro safety and fake rear sight.
Along with some unknown internals.
$1680 for a shooter...... if the barrel is ok.
But a nice stock.
All described by the seller as original except the barrel band.
Be sure to follow the new topic I posted where I'm looking for a born on date of a SG.
I'll add more to it.... hopefully tomorrow.
It has something I've never seen before.

I'd guess the crate is from the early 50s. Most WWII stuff was shipped in boxes not strippers.
Just looking at this thread and the OP's picture of the S'G' safety that was said to be a reproduction. I thought it looked real. Does anyone have a picture of a known real E-S'G' safety?

Kro may be onto something . I dug around and found 2 of these safeties that I would post but cant do it . If someone can post I could email of text pictures to you . I think I was confusing the prime marks on the flip sight with the prime marks on the safety , prime marks on flip sights are straight verticle and on the E-S'G' safeties they are slanted to the right . So this safety looks legit after looking at the examples I have . ..Quote:

GB is a weird and wonderful place. There was a 6 digit Inland with aftermarket folding stock & original type I band and that went for $525 last month. It was correctly listed as an Inland. That's commercial maker price territory.Quote:

"...to make their's correct..." No such thing as a "correct" M1 Carbine. Especially a Saginaw Grand Rapids Carbine. They only made 7 of the parts in total. The rest came from everywhere.
Just because none of the prime contractors produced all of their own part doesn't mean there's no such thing as an original carbine. They all had a chain of subcontractors for a reason(s), if that sub provided parts to one of the prime contractors then there's a chance a carbine as it left any given prime is original. Can you imagine how few carbines would have been built if all of the primes had to make all of their own parts? That would have given the term inefficiency a whole new meaning.Quote:
