Remembering Jim Flavin

Jim 'JimF4M1s' Flavin

It is with heavy heart I report we've lost this long time respected member.
Born and raised in Northern Ca May 7-1949. Jim passed away at the age of 70 from a long hard fought battle with cancer on Saturday, November 16-2019.

Jim and his wife Barbara celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary back on July 31st.
They met in 1966 as teenagers and married in 1968. He was a beloved husband and father.
Most know Jim joined the Navy in Oct 1967 and trained at Amphibious Base Coronado in San Diego.
Assigned as a engine-man on a 4 man Assault Craft. He served 4 years 4 months, 34 of those months in Vietnam. Jim served 3 combat tours in 68, 69 and 70. From Da nang.... north.
He would go to his old units memorial at Coronado every year. He celebrated life and appreciated the time he shared with his family. He commented once that "When my wife is broken up a bit I remind her, we just went down to Coronado for my old unit memorial. I have had 51 more years than the men we honor each year at that memorial."

We'll remember him for the man he was. Helpful to new and seasoned collectors. Always willing to share knowledge and his collection. A long time contributing member of The Carbine Club. A man of honor and honesty. For many of us Jim was a mentor.
He had a deep love for our Flag, Country, Those who serve and our Wounded Warriors.

It was Jim's wish that consideration be given to a donation to The Wounded Warriors Project or a Charity of your choice.

So long Jim, I talked to him and we had business. I missed meeting him only by the distance of the straights between us, about 35 miles... RIP buddy.

RIP Jim. I did not know you long, but appreciated the exchange of emails and carbine related items. They will be treasured more for their source rather than what they are.

Tomorrow, in remembrance, I'll use one of them when the mail arrives and try to add it to the next display.

He seemed like a decent chap who did his bit for his country.

Jim was a great guy. I was fortunate enough to get to do business with him a couple of times over the past year or two and I got to know him a little. His contribution to this hobby is massive.his contribution to our country is even more massive. He was a true patriot and I will miss him dearly on these forums .he was the kind of guy I would have loved to have had a beer with. RIP Jim, thank you for your service

This forum has lost a great man. We will all miss him.

I can't say this was unexpected, agent orange had killed him just as so many vets. Jim was a great guy and honest to the core. It is just too bad that they had moved up to WA. and things were going great. He knew what was coming and faced it square in the eye. Just too bad.

There’s No Doubt at all that Jim was a Great Guy and he will missed dearly. I remember when I first started here he was among the few that always took time to help me out and would pm me and would give me Great advice. Whatever you bought from him you knew you were getting Top Quality anything. RIP Jim I Salute You and God Bless You

I greatly enjoyed his contributions here and will miss his input.

Sorry to see that Jim passed-great picture of him standing in front of the "Organ of Muskets" at the Springfield Armory.

It's been awhile since I last visited the forum. My interests have changed from WW2 to the Civil War so I don't seem to check out Milsurps very often. But, I receive a notice this morning that my "Contributing Member" status was going to expire. I hit the donate button and thought it was a good time to see what is going on in the carbine world that's when I saw the notice about Jim.

Charlie, You Nailed it on the Head my Friend. I had LOT'S of Respect for Jim. I think Everyone knows who are the one's here that are Relentless in finding the Truth in a Post. If something didn't seem correct the next time you see them they had the correct answer and the info that backed it up just like You and BAR and Quite a few others Here. Jim kept that Inland letter opener in his desk drawer. I recall being on the phone with him and hearing him giggling while opening a letter from me.
As I started to ask what was so funny..... I stopped and said: Are you using your Inland letter opener?
He just chuckled louder and deeper as he replied "Yep".
We were close friends..... friends that never met in person. Jim was one of my first 'Mentors' back when you'd ask the silly questions. Long before we came here. I purchased many things from him but only when he would list as auctions. I didn't want the friend price, but it never failed when my package came in he had always included some small extra like a couple extra bolt tool pawls etc. I admired him for the man he was- honest and never a complaint. I believe all would agree he made a great fair minded Moderator. We always sent flowers for Jim and Barbs wedding anniversary. The 1st time we sent flowers after they had moved I looked up a highly rated florist near them and called telling them I wanted to send wedding anniversary flowers but had a special request. I asked the Florist if they had a artillery shell they could fill with stinging nettles wrapped in razor wire. They hung up on me, so I called back and the Wife picked out one of their arrangements from their online selection. But I did get them to add on the card that they couldn't fulfill the order as requested being in a artillery shell with stinging nettles wrapped in razor wire. Jim and Barb called us the next day after getting the flowers and both were laughing so hard I could barely make out what they were saying. When I told them about asking the florist and them hanging up on me they both started a hearty belly laugh. Sure wish I could have been there. That call seems like it was just a week or two ago. I still have many of his Emails I save along with Emails from Harlan and my friend Charles Waldrop from Alabama. November 16 will always be a Sad and Happy day for me. But a date I'll always remember because it was the day the good lord brought one of his soldiers home.
I do miss Poking the Bear, man how I loved getting him worked up and then saying I gotta go while hanging up before he could give me the business!

Like many here, we were lucky to have had the time we did with Jim. :cheers:

Sorry I missed posting last November 16 2022. Edye had been pretty sick, I had my hands full. Today is 2-13-23. I wanted you to know we lost Larry Ruth May 4 2022.
Also fellow Vietnam vet Mr. Bill Ricca Feb 7th, so keep an eye out for him and watch his 6 until he gets familiar with the lay of the land. We're keeping in touch with Barb when we can.

Our gun deer season starts nov 15, so it's easy to remember the date he passed. But with the Wife's health issues most of last year the only time I spent online was looking up medicines or trying that Portal messaging BS with her DR's. Today it clicked after reading about Mr Ricca to catch up on Jim's Memoriam. Man we've lost some great members/friends in what feels like a short time. I can't bring myself to clear out Emails from Harlan, Jim, Charles, Mike from New Zealand and Ricca to name just some. Takes time I guess...... which is running by fast.

Just so you know we'll never forget you and what you contributed to us. Not just here on these forums but also for our country.
I'm not sure in the short time that you've been gone if you'd even recognize the world we live in today.
But wanted you to know that your old posts continue to be useful to both older and newer members.
