Can anyone help identify anything about this mauser model 98?

I just picked this up on another board, and i'll admit I bought it cause it looked pretty and I know next to nothing about this rifle, and am trying to find out what exactly it is, and where its been over the years..

The only markings on it are what I assume is a german eagle on the bottom of the receiver, and what appears to be fluer-de-lis on both the bolt near the receiver and the side of the safety latch.

I appreciate any background on this firearm you guys can help me with. The original owner provided the photos, but didn't know for sure any of the background.

Well it looks like a "bitser" to me, assembled from a bunch of different parts ... :confused:

I have no idea what the Fleur De Lee marking is doing on a Mauser, but I can't quite make out the marking in detail ....

Until someone else has a better idea, I'd recommend you check the MKL and go through some of the photo montages for comparison, paricularly narrowing it down to checking those with a straight versus bent bolt handle for starters. ;)

Pretty sure you have a parts gun. The bolt is not relevent as the stock was made for a bent bolt anyway.
It looks like one of the early Israeli, clandestine imports. Maybe from a deal with Czech origins post WWII judging by the stock. (Post war Czech Mausers usually did not have the bolt takedown washers in the stock but, had the small hole in the buttplate near the toe of the stock which was used to take down the bolt)
The rest just looks like leftover parts put together. i wish that I could see the front site better. It appears to have a sight protector like a Czech VZ-24 but, it could just be the photo. At first glance I thought it was a VZ-24 in a "last ditch" or post war stock but, the rear sight is definately a 98k. Also, I would like to see how the bands are being held on. If they have screws holding them on it could give it another vote for "last ditch" but, a lot of Israeli ones had them too.
Either way it is a nice looking rifle and if it shoots good, bonus. The lack of markings may hinder trying to get an accurate value though. Post more pics and we'll see.

Czech 1946 Mauser? Lots of parts left over from WWII production. Sold to anyone with cash. Receiver looks weather-worn. Israel?-very likely.

Also, can anyone tell me what the letters under the german eagle are/mean? I can't fully make out the lettering, but assume one of you recognize the letters and the eagle stamp.

Those are Waffenamt markings and they indicate the German factory of manufacture. For example WaA63 ...

Seems 3 is indeed the last digit, although I suppose there is a very small chance the last digit was a 5 (its a little hard to tell, but a 3 seems much more probable when looking at it)

Also, one last question, does anyone know what the 74 stamped on the top side of the receiver might stand for? Was that simply supposed to match the last 2 digits of its origianl matching serial number?

or is the 74 to mean something else?

All of those small parts (including guard screws) should match and the'yd be the last two digits of whatever the original serial number of this rifle would have been ... ;)

Check the MKL for a 316 pic photo montage of an all correct and matching Oberndorf, so you can see what this rifle is supposed to look like ...

The Bolt Appears to be Spanish,
The Proof Mark on it is same as Proof on
Spanish 1943 Mauser 98s.

You seem to have a fixation with the bolt - 4 different photos of the same thing, also several other duplicates. Multiples of the same thing do not tell us anything and are of NO help answering your questions.
IF you would post photos of both sides & top of the rec and of the left side of the bbl there is some possibility that your questions can be answered.

What you have is a K98k rifle, based on what I see, I would guess it is a Yougoslav post war rebuild, But ----?

I would call your rifle a scrubbed 98k meaning most of the markings have been removed and the bolt is a total mismatch being a straight bolt. Like has been said a post war rebuild assembled from a conglomeration of parts. The barrel bands are stamped and welded, late war German production. The parts which are stamped with WaA 63 are probably Czech wartime production as this inspector number was assigned to Waffenwerke BRUNN around 1940 before that WaA63 was Oberndorf A/N, the main mauser works in Nazi Germany. There should be a series of numbers and letters on the barrel called the barrel code and Mauser experts(not me) can tell where and when the barrel was produced if it is German production.
Check the headspace and bang away, should be a decent shooter.

Where on the barrel might I find this? Will I have to disassemble it to view this part of the barrel?

Looks like your barrel code was scrubbed as well unless it is a Yugo rebarrel. The barrel code was usually stamped just ahead of the receiver ring at right angles to the barrel, sometimes partly below the wood.

Was it common to scrape the barrel code like this on the post-war rifles leaving Waffenwerke BRUNN?

I have never seen or heard of bbls being scrubbed except for the Beschutz being punched.
My guess is an unmarked post war rebbl job.

Can anyone identify the type of sling I should be looking for to match this type of stock? I'd like to complete it with the proper type of sling.

I got a great looking sling off ebay. Just do a search for K98 slings and several types will show up. You want to find one with a "keeper" that holds the sling in that groove in the stock. Seems price was right around $20 and quality was outstanding. Also lots cheaper than the real deal and you don't need to worry about hurting it. Some have period type markings some don't.

I'm not sure if I would be breaking a rule by posting the actual link to them or not so I'll Id the seller. It was precisionventures, price was $19.99, they are still listing them. i was very happy with it. Sling date was same year as my rifle. I know it's a repro but it's still nice to have the year match.
