The snap is to lock it in place on the pistol belt where it was designed to go.
They were I believe designed to fit the M1910 belt. It was soldiers who figured they could fit on the stock
Yup they were never designed for use on a carbine stock. The snap was to attach it to a belt. I have suggested using plastic tape over the snap to not scratch the stock if you put it on one.
yep, there is no such thing as a buttstock pouch, they are belt pouches.
The pouch for the 30 round magazines is not as common as the 15 round pouch. Difficult to find dates before 1949 too but they are around. Sometimes faked years agoAttachment 91102Attachment 91103Attachment 91104
Guys in the field could have cared less about scratching thier stock. Quicker access to a full magazine. I have mounted a pouch for looks. But if left on a long time it can discolor the stock a bit. Same with leaving a muzzle cover on for an extended time. I took a drill bit and by hand slowly turned it in the snap. Removed the snap completely. Eliminating the chance of tape or something else covering the snap to move or come off. I'd rather disfigure a $20 pouch today ($3 to $5 back in the 80's) than scratch a stock worth hundreds.
The earliest 30 round pouch I have is a 1947 and I'm not sure what the earliest date would be.

Thanks guys, I knew you all would have the answer!
Hmm, I would think you would see some right after the M2 came into play and the adaption of the 30 round mag. I have seen modified 15 rounders with a piece sewn in. Other than WB series I have never seen a 30 round mag pouch. Giess I will have to add that to my list of things to get.
WB2 does show MILCOM PRODUCTS INC/ QT (CTM) 2889, 11/28/58.
I do not know if that is a date or date of contract but if so it would seem that might be latest date marked.
Probably a couple years ago now wife and I stopped in to a crafts store. Don't recall what she was looking for but I came across a bag of clear plastic 4 piece snaps. I've seen where guys have razored the back snap off their pouch.
Thought about being able to use part of them to snap a cap over the inside snap of the belt pouch. With no pouch with me to compare size, I tore the bag open and snapped one over the snap on my wind breaker.... perfect fit. They were cheap and I'd torn the bag open so I was a buyer. A worker there came over and seen what I was up to and pointed out something they called 'Over Snaps' or 'Poppers' that worked nicely and you don't have to assemble the Female part. They worked for mine, the rest were tossed in the junk drawer next to the dryer downstairs IIRC. Keep an eye out if needed, they are around. Your local hardware might have something similar.
