Hi all,
I bought a M51A 7" blade bayonet with M8 scabbard for my Springfield Armory M1 Garand of 1954.
Do you think that the bayonet model is correct for my Garand age ?
I also have a Springfield Armory M1 Garand of June 1944 (D-Day)
Which exact model of bayonet and scabbard should I get for this rifle ?
Is the M1 10" blade bayonet correct or should I get a M1942 16" blade one or a M1942 (M1E1) cutted to 10" blade instead ?

Personally I think you need all of them anyway. Just for examples of what they are. The 1954 would use the M5 blade. The 1944 could have either the 1905E5 or the M1 blade as both would be on issue depending on the unit or area. One unit would get issued with one type, and then when those ran out the next unit gets the next type.

It seems a M1942 being cut to 10" with U.F.H. + U.O.S + 1942 printed over.
I guess it should come with a M3 cut scabbard or with an M7 one.

That example will suffice because it has all the features. 1942 date, modified for the new M1. Remarked accordingly. An M3 scabbard would be nice...

This bayonet would also work for your 1954 rifle. The USMC was still using any 10" bayonet in 1954. It was in 1955 or 1956 that they switched to the M5 type. Of course, your rifle would have spent most of its active service period with the M5A1 so that is the one I would go with. As Jim said. the 10" pictured will work fine with a 1944 M1 rifle.Quote:

My father in law was a company armorer in Europe in 1953-54 in the 5th Divison. They had a mixed lot of Garands, some new, some old. Most of the bayonets he had in his arms room were WWII cut down 1905s. So, as late as when your Garand was made the older bayonets were still in use. my 1954 M1 Garand has a perfect stock which really seems new, no Department of Defense Acceptance Stamp (Eagle with 3 stars) .50"x.50" stamp and no 'P' proof mark on its pistol grip.
Anyway, browsing some American forums, I saw many of about same age M1 Garand which had almost same new stock. The same thing in some German auction web.sites (my M1 Garand comes from Germany).
Do you think stock has been replaced ?
Or maybe did it came out of factory or arsenal that way ?

From what I can see, your stock looks to have been heavily worked. Re-finished. Sanded. It looks like a repair under the rear sight on the right side.
Any chances to get an original stock of those age in good conditions bearing all original marks ?

That's going to be an Ebay thing. Those are extremely expensive and rare. Marked stocks command a premium. That's why there's so many fakes.
That's true ... it is so easy to make fake marks and stamps over wood.
My 1944 M1 Garand stock "seems" to be an original one with "GWA" print and "P" mark, but who really knows if it is original or a fake ?

I bought it when I was 13 years old in 1974 in a small used items market in Milan where also military staff were sold.
you have a nice assortment of bayonets in your collection , the scabord you have for your cut down M1905E1 is a cutdown M3A1 and very proper as a set , as well as your 44 rifle
adding a nice M6 and M9 should round out the newer end , the M10 scabord would be fine for a late M7 but the M8A1 would be good for the VN era M7 ,
now you need to move backward to the 16" M1905s with that assortment of scabords , then the M1917s and their scabords and M1892s and those assorted scabbords ,

For a Springfield 1903 WWI stated in good conditions I have been requested $ 400
armi
and I wonder wheter it is original in all its parts including its scabbard ...
After a few searching I could find at ebay the stock with handguards for my M1 Garand of '54.
The stock is original Springfield Armory and seems it has never been restored and it brings the signs of the time, lots of dings etc etc.
According to this web-site it should be same age of my M1 Garand :

You miss anyway a "Queen" like this, a Colt 1911 A1
This is mine, it is in mint conditions and 100% unfired even if 1943, since it came from a lot of Colt from Russia, to which USA Governement sold them long time ago. It is fully original in every part, unfortunatly the chamber has been reduced of 2 mm depth so to accept only 45 HP rounds, when before of 1997 45 ACP was a military caliber only and it was forbidden to civilians in Italy.
I can't even remove that small ring since it would not be legal in Italy, it would be considered "fire arm alteration" and it is a crime here.
After 1997 the 45 ACP became legal to everybody so that I have a few 1911 models, the hand gun I most love and prefer.

Nice year of manufacture Bizio! I find that one VERY desireable! Mine's later. WW1 issue. You can get replacement scabbards from a couple of US manufacturers and the one I had was a very good reproduction of 1910 scabbard. I don't know if that's the sort of thing you're after. Here's pics of the one I found.

That's a real scabbard. If that's the one you bought you did well. The grip scales are around and shouldn't be hard to find. Don't throw out the walnut, you'll be able to sell them later.

I have re gripped a couple of Garand bayonets. Try a loose dry fit without tightening the screws. You may need to file down the pommel end of the grips a little. If you force them they can crack. Also oil the locking parts whilst the bayonet handle is stripped down. Check to see if the cross guard is level. If it is bent it could brake the locking pins on your new scabbard. You have had a nice find. These bayonets sell in the UK for between £200 to £400, that's if you can find one of course! So enjoy your exhibit.

I guess we can say there's no doubt about that one?? Very nice. Now you have one to compare when the other arrives. That's the scabbard I have as well, it's the one you will usually see as the M1910's were mostly worn out by WW2.

In the UK if you do find a long Garand bayonet or M1905 bayonet. They are often ex US Navy. It appears the US Navy did not shorten their bayonets and used them for cerimonial duties. My own 1942 long Garand "Army" bayonet was only the 4th one I had ever seen, so I bought it quick for £145.00. Two years ago the Greek Army sold off a batch of M1905 and Garand Bayonets. They were £145 trade and £175 retail. Now these fetch £200!+ If you have some of these long bayonets. Please look after them.

Unfortunatly, due to our old laws deregulating arms, I can't buy any bayonet abroad or import it.
So I must be happy with all I can find locally.
Lucky the Italian Army had the Baretta Garand on issue then ! I bet the retired soldiers have a few bayonets they "forgot" to hand in!

Got given as a present a Camillus M3 trench knife. Mint and made in about 1945. Same as the bayonet above but no rifle fittings. Got Eickhorn G3 bayonets, Eickhorn M2000 ( the modern M3), Ontario M7 and M3 Trench knife ( both modern). as well as an M14 rifle bayonet. They all share the same blade design.
Could have kicked myself on Sunday, found a nice factory cut down 1942 garand bayonet. Slightly expensive at £65.00. Just had a walk around the stall to think about it. then some one else bought it!

Keep away from the Colt M9. It's made in China. Ontario do a nice M9. I imported one from the USA last year. PM me if you want the dealer. They sell for £175 in UK. Got one duty paid from the USA for about £114.00. Rather than buy fakes or old worn out bayonets. It's sometimes better to buy new from the manufacturers and it saves all the leg work. Ontario and Eickhorn still make new bayonets. John Nowill make the current issue Royal Marine Commando knife.

Unfortunatly due to the severe deregulations and laws in Italy, bayonets are still considered to be arms as they were fire arms.
I can't import any bayonet from abroad, it is forbidden by the law, so I must be happy with all I can find here. Every bayonet I buy must be completed with origin documentation stating its legal origin otherway Police would never authorize me to keep it.

Bizio, why would you want to replace the wooden grips with plastic? If the wooden grips were in good repair, the US Army left them in place through WW2 unless the blade was shortened to the later M1 configuration or the bayonet was reworked to repair serious damage that took the bayonet out of service. Yours never went through this indignity in service and it would be a shame not to leave it as found to preserve it's history. As I said, the wooden grips stayed in service with the Army, Marines and/or Navy for as long as the bayonet was in good shape for service, not all were replaced.Quote:

The original wooden grips, if in good condition, were used on the M1905 bayonets as long as the long '05 stayed in service unless the bayonet needed complete refurbishment. I had one with it's original wood scales. I've seen others too. They were on an early blade and the same thing seemed to apply. If the scales were OK then leave them. I'll bet that changed with time(probably only months).
the original wood grip scales had the cutter marks , once they were worn or sanded they became smooth like the repaired one in your photo , i agree with your replcaement in this case ,
the M3 scabbords marked with USN were made for the plastic navy trainer bayonets , not issued and thus abundant in great condition , still an excellent example of the genuine article ,
the M8 / M8A1 scabords with B.M.CO [beckwith] , PWH [philladelpia work house - for the blind] , V.P.CO [victory plastic] , TWB , VIZ , WP & WD , all are legit US mfgrs , and they fit everything in the picture below except my Ka-Bar and M1

Definitely less RIA blades around and less yet that escaped cut down. You still need the M1910 scabbard though. As I do...Nice pair though.

I had repurchased the scabbard which should be delivered to me directly to Italy.
Unfortunatly it was more expensive than the first one I boght.

Hi Bizio, I'm barely aware of the US laws because I'm Canadian. On the other side of the coin, I was in Miami yesterday and the week before...wish I'd known.
There are several here that will likely pick up this thread with advise shortly. I'll bet Patrick Chadwick has had dealings with shipping out of the US to Germany, that might be an individual to try.
By the way, nice catch on that scabbard.
Ops, I do apologize, Browningautorifle, I forgot your are not living in US.
Hopefully the second scabbard should be here before the end of this week.

I got the scabbard today, it is original and as it was described in the ebay auction, it is entirely painted in OD, also the top metal part.
Do you suggest me to leave as it is now or should I try to remove the OD paint at least from the metal part with some solvent (turpentine, acetone etc etc) ?
I would gently brush acetone on with the scabbard held mouth down. Don't let the acetone touch the rest or it may do damage. Using tupentine and fine steel wool may work too but I would still do it upside down. Wipe off with paper towel after to clean as you go...I'm sure you'll get more on this.
