Rudy...
Duff's data, reproduced in Canfield, states that the March 1943 Springfield Armory serials ranged from 1396256 to 1469177.Quote:

Update: You can also find the same information on this very site, at https://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=18167

so this receiver number reflects a march of 43 production?? if so then a barrel date of 12-43 is wrong. i hear the barrels should be dated 0 to 3 months prior to receiver production.
thank you.
Well never say never, it is possible, but I think highly unlikely especially since in early 43 the reserve supply of receivers was very low due to an accidental cancellation of SA's order of receiver steel from the steel mills in Dec. 42.
If the finishes of the receiver and barrel match then it could be a WW2 rebuild. The overseas ordnance departments did rebuild rifles with spare barrels. I have a Dec 42 barrel stamped PBS 10-44 (peninsular base section). Not 100% sure of the meaning of the stamp other than that barrel was in Italy in October 1944. And even SA rebuilt some (~500k?) in WW2, on top of building new rifles.
thank you for the reply.
I received from CMP a SA 3,741,112, May 45 Garand with a 12-43 SA barrel that's in the white. Was it a rebuild or SA using up their barrel supply with the war in Europe being over or first in last out of the bin? Either way it stays on this Garand.
