It looks about flat new, near the best I've seen.
Very nice rifle but I have only one question and I know that the bolt head No. is irrelevant but I have to ask a No.3 size bolt head in a almost new rifle considering there are 3 other sizes before that one is reached 0, 1, 2 size being progressively larger in relation to their number. It is just a question not suggesting anything sinister about the rifle in question.
My personal thought on the No. 3 size bolt head is it what was simply needed to achieve the proper head space before leaving the factory. It is Savage and flaming bomb marked, which would be nearly impossible to find as a replacement had the head space been "worn" to necessitate it. It seems to fall into the acceptable range outlined on these boards many times before.
Beautiful Rifle ! Congrats!
That is a beautiful example, I would go for that No4 in a heartbeat .. museum worthy example.
Hesalite: I don't know what the odds of finding a "3" bolt head on a virtually unused No. 4 would be but I wouldn't think it would be high. On the other hand, a former owner/ tinkerer might have put a "3" on it to tighten up headspace to the lower limits and for no real reason. I have a Longbranch with a really big "3" on it that was set up by a target shooter to just barely allow the bolt to close on thicker rimmed brass. Gauging it showed I could easily get acceptable headspace with a normal "1" or "2" bolt head. Getting back to your rifle, the only thing I see in the photos that I wonder about is the strap at the rear of the forend. To me that doesn't look like the way they came from the factory. Is the forend Savage stamped?
