I have a guy that wants to sell me a mauser. All this guy knows is that its a turkish mauser and the barrel is pitted out. Couple questions what model is this, what does a different barrel cost, and the most importand what is it worth.Attachment 27949
1903 Turkish Mauser, looks to be on a large ring 98 action, in 8mm, and worth about $150ish. With a pitted bbl, maybe less. Appears to be in great shape externally and so a shame that the barrel was allowed to rust. It is possible (and likely in this country) that someone may have shot some corrosive ammunition through it without cleaning up after and ruined the bore or it could have come here that way (I feel to be less likely). Either way, not really worth a rebarrel. Looking at between $75 to $100+ for a decent barrel let along what it will cost to install and headspace it. Not really worth it unless it has some super rare feature, which is most unlikely. Some more pics would help us out but as of now, it looks like a run of the mill Turk, pretty common in this country. Incidentally, Turk Mausers are a relatively inexpensive niche to start collecting as they present some very interesting models and most of them are still relatively affordable.
Sorry if I sound retarded but I know nothing about mausers. If I understand this I would need a large ring barrel. Numrich has small ring barrels for like 25 dollars.
You will need a small ring barrel for the large ring Mauser. Sounds crazy, but it is true. Pass on this project. A bad bore Turk isn't worth much and not worth re-barreling. I haven't seen any surplus barrels floating about and a gunsmith would certainly charge over $100.00 for the labor. Pass on the project. If you want the rifle pay $75.00 for it.
Too bad someone doesnt have a barrel for this. In the pics this gun looks amazing with the sling, stripper clips, several boxes of ammo. Also a ammo pouch. He wants 125 and only lives 45 miles away. Also says it and 8mm was this 7.92 originally. Guess I will have to keep looking for my next project.
I still see lots of Turk Mausers at all of the big gunshows. Just get busy this weekend and hit 3-4 shows this month. Good luck.
8mm is 7.92. 8mm Mauser is more specifically 7.92x57mm
you could always make some slightly oversized lead bullets and load them up and fire them with o.k. accuracy. 125 seems a little steep when you can get a yugo 24/47 with no pitting for around 199
