Bad back remedy....

After shifting nearly 24 ton of soil (all manual digging, shovelling and wheelbarrowing) the back had finally had enough, can't say it was all the soil but probably trying to remove the tree stumps at the last knockings that something went.... just a strain but think age has a bit to do with it too, common sense prevailed and I called it a day.

So options are simple, pain killers etc, or take it easy and rest.... with a a lot of timber to burn off, thought I,d light the fire, get comfortable and crack a few cans open plus a few tots of rum....and have a look at recent purchase.

Yup, just take it easy and give it time. Age has more to do with it than actual injury.

If you like the book get a copy of A Rifleman Went to War by McBride.

x2. Now approaching the back side of 55 and still physically strong just need more breaks and longer recuperation time I find. No need to kill yourself and nothing to prove.
My doctor told me that we have long passed the time when people did "back breaking" labour as a daily thing but he sees far more back injuries these days.
A direct result of bodies being unaccustomed to the strain and rebelling when pushed.

I really enjoyed Herb McBride's old book on WW1 sniping. He was actually the father of modern sniper doctrine. An American who enlisted in the Canadian Army and fought with our boys until the U.S. entered the war. He then transferred to the American army but rocked the boat so much he was quietly pushed out. A guy who had actually "been there and done that" and knew what he was talking about except no one wanted to listen.

I think McBride's excessive drinking had a lot to do with them not listening.

In general, people have to be desperate to overlook negative social mores, or a lot of time has to pass. Time has passed and now we see the value. It’s not overshadowed by his personal issues as it was back then.

I am 63 and in the past 5-6 years I have noticed that my formerly-robust integrated self-repair response to strain/damage has really degraded.

Even though I am doing my daily exercises by ~6:05am and keep active and strong, the old Bod seems to periodically just decide to mess with me ... and then it often takes what seems like a LONG time to fix the (usually somewhat painful) issue.

To quote Sipowicz from the TV Show, NYPD Blue,

"Can't p*ss, can't see ... I'll tell you, this getting old, it ain't for sissies."

I believe it will get worse too. I spent 35 years infantry, I think maybe that part will catch up with me too. Some good days and some bad. This morning I was a mass of pain and by noon it had all eased off. Spent yesterday standing over a milling job and should have gone to the gym this AM, gave it a pass until tomorrow. Got the work done though, so at least there's that.

Too many years of playing in the scrum in Rugby Union and time in the bush with all manner of kit heaped on the back and sleeping on terra firma, and yes, my back lets me know it wants a long hot shower each morning and the occasional dose of NSAIDs. Old age definitely isn't for weaklings or cowards.
