Thanks all for your input.
The colour actually is a sort of battleship grey, the lighting altered it in the picture. Sorry about that.
It seems the surplus store where it was bought decided...
One of my projects for this winter is to restore a transit case I bought last year that needs some TLC. I have a can of the original paint (which I'll have to filter and mix thoroughly...).
Now...
I've seen lavoltiges' rifle and I fully intend to beg him to bring it to the range next time I drop by...
It is an interesting piece of hardware.
As long as no attempt is made to counterfeit the markings and misrepresent the end product, no harm done.
I know I would not alter a nice original piece by drilling and tapping, but if the damage is...
I had the opportunity to shoot Lavoltiges' rifle last winter . Several friends and I took turns and put all our shots in one ragged hole in the same target at 100 yards. Well, there was an...

Ok, how do I go about doing this? And which are the outer edge frictioning surfaces?
Well, that didn't work out. If I install the hammer screw with the hammer in the uncocked position, the hammer won't pivot. It seems the firing pin stops the hammer from rotating. If I install the...
Well, the postman finally delivered the hammer assembly I'd ordered. The thumbpiece and firing pins are strikingly different:

I did think that even taking "War Finish" into account, the machining marks were a bit much...
Guess I will look for a new hammer.
I'll take more pictures later, when I get a chance. In the meantime, here are close-ups of the hammer in the uncocked and coked positions I'd already taken:

I recently bought a Webley Mk IV revolver in .38 S&W. It's in great shape with no noticeable wear on the mechanism.
I'm able to cock the hammer, but when I press the trigger, the hammer falls...
So? How does she shoot?
You worked your magic again louthepou
So far, I think the suggestion that the punch marks were applied when the weapon was returned to theatre stores is the most likely.
Thanks. If anyone comes up with documentation that would be great!...
Somebody I correspond with has acquired a very nice 1945 No. 5 manufactured at BSA Shirley.

I did think about the Highlanders, but the initials are in the wrong order... I'm inclined to...
An acquaintance has found the following markings on the side of his no 5's buttstock:
26 10 48
I H L

A SQN
Logically, I would think that:
Line 1 would be the date of issue in the unit,...
An acquaintance owns a 1943 Long Branch. The inside surface of the buttplate's trapdoor bears a cast-in marking on the inside surface.
It is basically a circle with points at 2, 6 and 10 o'clock,...
