I would not dismiss a mount with a weld.
The mount I received from CMP when they sold all the M1D accessories was welded at the thumb wheel with a screw that was a different thread.

Looks like a Redfield International rear sight. The Palma attaches the iris below the horizontal slide and the International attaches the iris above the horizontal slide.

Maybe a slip on rubber butt pad was left on for an extended period of time.

The rifle you are holding looks like a Remington 40X standard barrel.

I think he meant the Z of the serial number was polished out.

If the H&R has DCM papers that would distinguish it as not being a Greek return as I believe the DCM was replaced by CMP before the Greeks returned any M1s
