I have heard tales of "impossible" front site covers that would not remove without scratching the finish on the barrel. Looking at the gauge of the metal, I believe this. However, mine slips on and...
I don't see ANYTHING on that receiver to have been "relocated."
Your barrel date jibes with the serial #, but your stock inspector stamp suggests a rebuild. George A. Woody (G.A.W.) was at Springfield much later than when your rifle was produced (1943-44)....
Quick post to show how Bill Bentz's repro USMC front site will fit inside the standard front site cover. I remove the cover when I shoot, but it appears "do-able" to shoot with the cover on.

She doesn't seem to mind. Occasionally she gets out of the house. This was grooundhog hunting a few weeks ago.https://www.milsurps.com/images/imported/2009/08/farmgun-1.jpg
I could do with fewer bulges, but that scant stock NEEDS one right behind the trigger guard to make things right.
You are correct, sir. The VISUAL ACCOMPANIMENT is always a welcome addition to anyone's posting. I have so very little to offer in terms of expertise that I feel obliged to be, at least, visually...
Panama Ordnance Depot rebuild marks, methinks. See link.http://m1903.com/rbmarks.htm
I can't help myself every year when the Guns & Ammo surplus issue comes out. I have to buy it. I read the article on the Gibbs rifle, but reread it with "new eyes" after following this forum...
Nicholas Associates sells TMs and exploded diagrams for milsurps. See link and scroll to bottom. Perhaps one of the manuals? Worth a phone call. Keep us informed as to your progress. Best o' luck.
I wonder which type the CMP is shipping out on their "M1 Specials." I have read about "fat Boyd's stocks," but your photos are much better than a description. Thank...
Purchased mine through Scott Duff website. There it is explained fairly simply.http://www.scott-duff.com/ShooterAcc.htm#ShooterAccessories
They do. Let me rephrase: As opposed to the dowdy loose swimwear the Marines donned in WW1 (see photo), the Army doughboys wore "Speedos."
Not the first time my odd sense of humor has failed me....
And the Army wore "Speedos."http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u23/Liam_068/prepared6.jpg
A regular front sight hood will fit and cover your new front sight. I have the sight set also from Mr. Bentz. The only advantage to the USMC front sight cover is that it provides a larger aperture...
Been looking at the CMP Special M1 offer. Pricey, not original stock, new barrel...not for the "collector." But as a shooter it seems a reasonable deal. Could sell my Persian Mauser to finance the...
Put my SA M1903, #1,383,941, 8-44 bbl Ogden rebuild to work on groundhogs this past Saturday. Shooting off home-made shooting sticks while seated I can consistantly keep beer coaster-size groups at...
The rest roughly translates as "Dear Departed."
Nice to see the CSP carrying on despite the rough road.
I do all the stuff I post. The bad jokes and dumb Photoshop stuff...I have to claim those as well.
Slow here at work today...
Jim -
Been reading "Given Up For Dead" (takes forever since I have little ones) which is about Wake Island and am getting inspired. Perhaps I need to be a little more interactive with this new...
Anyone recall a poster from the CSP who went by "Madsenshooter"? Does he post here under a different name?
Thanks in advance
Liam
INSCOM patch. Thanks for your service.
Yes, the last American soldier from WWI Mr. Frank Buckles is 108 and lives on his cattle farm near Charles Town, WV. I'll be seeing him 2 weeks from now when...
