    Stevens 416 US Property

Any opinions on the Stevens Model 416? I found one of the US Property models with a Redfield peep sight. Nice looking but I have a couple questions: (1) Did the military trainer come with a Redfield sight; (2) Was the stock varnished on the military trainers; and (3) is $300 too much? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

No the Stevens 416 came with a Stevens rear sight which are rare to find. the stocks were oiled finished. And the front sight was a Stevens called the "tonbstone sight" because it was domed shape like a tombstone. If it has no other probelms 300.00 would be a fair price.

I just agreed to pay $560 shipped for a 98% blued US Property marked rifle. Only down side to it is that the rear sight has been replaced with a Lyman.

It has an SA rebuild mark but I kinda like the markings.

I would jump on a $300 rifle in good condition.

My Stevens M416 was sold by Sears, prior to WWII, under the Sears label "Ranger".

I paid $150.00 in 1976 for my rifle. A M52 was $250.00. M52's have increased in value far more than these Stevens.

I was able to find original front aperature sights. I had the Stevens rear. My Stevens rear is not mechanically very tight, too loose for target shooting.

The rifle is accurate. Stevens made good barrels. The trigger mechanism is less complicated than a M52, mine breaks cleanly.

I had the bolt handle bent, and scope added in the 80's. This year I added the padded buttplate and forend tape. The tape made a difference on target at 100 yards prone. Less slipping gave better grouping.

My 416 rebuild came with a Redfield rear sight/ Stevens front sight parkerized along with the rest of the rifle. Can't answer you on the stocks but mine is oil finished.
