A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. If you mean M1D, I don't believe so. The barrel marking should end in 555 not 448.

A picture or two would help but the drawing number 35448 is for the standard M1icon barrel.

Most M1D barrels were made on special production runs. They were marked D7312555 on the top of the barrel. The rear handguard usually must be removed to see this mark.

At least one reference shows the drawing number visible on the side of the barrel when the operating slide was pulled to the rear. In the photograph that i saw though the number appeared to have been "messed with".

    Regards,

    Jim

I have seen M1D barrels made up with commercial sight blocks by turning down a standard issue (D 653448). I do not know if the Army made any that way. I have two M1D rifles, both have barrel drawing number D 7312555, one is marked on the top, and one is marked on the right side.
