Mauser98 1000 yrd ammo load info needed
My goal is to use a standard Persian Mauser 98, with a 29" barrel in excellent condition to hit the target at 1000 yards. The stock was relieved and bedded and using a Zeiss scope. I do know that I might need a 20 moa base, but given that I am using a Repro german WW2 LRS mount, I am stuck, unless I build a special 20MOA adapter for the scope base.
I am not expecting benchrest accuracy. I am Holding 1 moa at 100 yrds will translate to 10" at 1k. However, as long as I can hit the 10 ring which is about 20" diameter, I am happy.
I am handloading using sierra matchking 200gr HPBT, 42.3gr IMR 4064. So the questions are:
1) Do i need to develop different loads as I move up to 600 and 1k yards?
2) Does anybody have experience at 1k yards with 8mm SMK 200gr? powder charge? or any other load?
Thank you in adavnce for all the replies

You are correct to assume that you will need more elevation. Not sure of the zeiss specs but most scopes run out of elev adjustment at about 700-800yd or so with the 200smk. A scope with mildots may allow hold over. I shoot a similar rifle, a Brno 98/22, good throat, bore, crown with 200smk and Varget (near max load). The rifle shoots moa at 100, 1.5moa at 200, but really opens up at 550yds. I tried to shoot 600 but the scope I had at the time failed and I have not tried again with my new scope; bushnell 10x40 mil. I use it on sillouettes and it only hits 5-6 out of 10 rams. Rams bodies are no more than about 2 moa high, and I am going over and under alot. Also my rifle starts to shoot low as it heats up. 1 moa at 1K is 10" and the 10 ring may be a challange with that cartridge. Not sure if the 200smk is even super-sonic still at 1K. Best of luck.

You might want to consider loading that a bit hotter, since you're probably well under Mach 1 (~1126 fps @ standard conditions) before impact at 1000 yards. Unless your chronograph tells you otherwise, MV with that charge is probably a bit under 2400 fps, even with the long barrel. The strong 98 action should be happy to digest significantly higher pressure than your current load generates. QuickLOAD estimates follow -
Cartridge : 8 x 57 IS (8 mm Mauser CIP)

Also remember a 200gr SMK does not have the same BC as original 198 gr . I believe the original German Heavy ball had a BC around .590.

"I believe the original German Heavy ball had a BC around .590."
Exactly! That would make a huge difference at 1K. The 200SMK is listed at .520 @ 2300fps and above & .461 below 1700fps. Even Hornady's 196 BTHP is listed at .525 (G1) no velocity given, but BC drops off with velocity. The German bullet may still be above .500 BC at 1K.
