Hit it with boiled-linseed oil. Hand rub it in and let it sit overnight. Wipe of excess and then hit it with 0000 steel wool soaked in BLO. Wipe of excess. This is a kind of cleaning and improves the look of the stock by smoothing the surface.
Keep applying coats of BLO until the walnut picks up some weight. You will know by the feel of the walnut when it has absorbed enough oil. Might need to hit it again with dry steel wool to smooth it out. Makes a big improvement on the appearance.

Hi- I just got a 5.4 Garand last weekend. It appears to be in incredibly clean shape.
Mine was on consignment at my local gun shop, I didn't get it from the CMP. It appears to be a Greek return, but I thought those were in the 5.8 range. Maybe the 5.4's are the SA's and the 5.8's are the HRA's? I don't know)
Anyway- I'll post pics soon, but glad to see someone in the near family on the forum.
