A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. I will accept PayPal, Zelle, MO and good old checks (and cash if you want to stop by for a tour!). CLICK BANNER to send me a PM for International pricing and shipping. The 1922M1 Rifle went into production in 1925 and was produced into 1931. The M2 rifle came into production in 1932 and used a bolt with a faster lock time and a magazine that came up slightly higher into the receiver for more reliable feeding. In 1935 the M2 bolt was changed to have a locking lug that allowed it to be adjusted for headspace when installed in a rifle. Most all of the 1922 and 1922M1 rifles in govt possession, including those issued to DCM affiliated rifle clubs, were called in and upgraded by replacement of the bolt and magazine with the late M2 type. When this was done a B was stamped as a suffix to the serial number and an additional I was stamped after the model number to make it read 1922MII and the serial number of the rifle was etched on the bottom of the new bolt. I understand that these upgrades to MII started in 1937. At least we know they started in 1935 or later when the adjustable headspace bolt came into production. I trust this answers your question.

One more bit of trivia. There were new 1922M1 NRA Sales rifles in inventory at Springfield Armory after the M2 bolts came into production. Some of these were upgraded by installation of either the early M2 bolt or later M2 (headspace adjustable) bolt before being sold. There are a few other exceptions, etc but I believe the above should answer your question.

I have been researching the 1922 series Springfields and collecting them for many years. I know of no better place to get information about them than on this forum or on the 1903/03A3/03A4 forum on this site. There is lots of misinformation posted about these rifles as there is no, or at least I know of no, single complete and accurate reference book about them. FWIW
