A couple of M1 Carbines

I'm new here, but frequent several other forums. You guys really seem to be into M1 Carbines, so I figured I'd post some pics (sorry, not the best) of this Inland and Quality I picked-up within the last month. Both of these were priced at $550 at my local shop, but I actually traded in some handguns for them.

First up is a Quality Hardware Ser# 1634xxx with a light Arlington Ordnance import stamp on the bottom of the barrel. It has a Rock-ola stamped barrel. The trigger housing has a "W" stamp. It all so has a Korean sling, and just a little white paint on the stock. I noticed what looks like a "59" stamped in front of the trigger guard. Anyone know what that means?

Back in 88 or 89, I was in a local Woolworths Drug store. I remember seeing racks of M-1 Carbines listed for $139 each. I never bought one than, but I think this might have been one of those rifles.












This Carbine is a little more interesting. This is an Inland ser# 5188xxx with a 5-44 marked inland barrel and Inland marked trigger housing. What makes it interesting is who use to own it. It belonged to a Chick Iverson III who past away in 1998. Chick Iverson was a very close friend with John Wayne. So much so, he's even buried next to him. Chick's daughter who inherited several guns, brought a few to my local shop to sell. I own 4 of the guns she sold. I can't prove it, but there's a good chance "The Duke" may have handled or even fired this rifle.

This rifle has no import marks. So I was wondering, what is the history of M1 Carbines in the US? I'm sure there where bring backs, but when did the DCM start selling these rilfes to the public? I'm assuming any rifle brought back into the US after 68' would have an importers marking unless it went through the DCM?

The stock doesn't seem to have any real visible marks, but it almost looks like a RS in the cut out? What do you guys think?

Ditto what shady said. The RS might be RSG, take an old soft tooth brush and clean it up some and see if the "G" shows up. That would be a Robert Irwin stock made for Saginaw. Take the mag pouch off and see if there are any stamps under it. The Winchester recoil plate is a little differant with the X on it. They show up on Win screws but I haven't seen one on the plate. Any idea ware Mr. Iverson may have got it from? DCM sold carbines in the '60's like for about $20.00.

Tried to clean-up the area. No such luck on the G. I looks like something was stamped there, but it could be just a fluke. No other marks on the stock.
I have no history on the rifle and never got to talk to his daughter. I'm sure she's had it since his death, but who knows when he got it. Most of the info. I've found out about Mr. Iverson has been via google. Here's a business card that my dealer got from the daughter and gave me. I guess JW use to hand these out.


I don't think either one of these had been shot in years. Should I replace recoil springs? I also got some 30 round mags with the Quaility that are marked "made in USA". They actually don't seem that bad and have the bolt hold open follower. Anyone know who made these? I do have 6 USGI 15 rounders enroute.

Dump,the springs are most likely just fine. Take them out and shoot them, that's what they were made for. The 30's sound like after market, but if they work you're o.k. The G.I. 15's are probably the best to use. How about some pics of the internals? Have fun, you only need 8 more to have the 10 who made them. Good luck and welcome to carbine mania.....Frank

Can you take a closer look by the serial number behind the rear sight??? I have a Rock-Ola and mine says so right "above" the serial number. Looks like it might be hidden by your rear sight.

Best that I can gather from internet sources, Rock-Ola made only about 4% of all M1 Carbines.

I'm pretty sure it's Quality, as it falls in the serial # range assigned to Quaility Hardware.

Anyone have info. on the 59 in front of the triggerguard?

I'll try to add pics of the internals when I get a chance.

Anyone know if the DCM kept records of the carbines they sold in the 60's?

In the QHMC,
Looks to be a H.I. or I.I Straight hammer, with a WRA Op Slide. Pretty common to find a letter/number on the back shelf of a WRA slide. Look inside/bottom of slides box for a tiny W. Can be hard to see in the milling scars.

Looking at the right side of your full length view of the OI-Inland stock. Looks like the shadow of a Crossed Cannons stamp on the right rear/ just forward of the oiler slot.

Is there a beveled slope between the front lugs on your Inland trigger Housing?
That Inland Trigger Housing looks to have a trigger with the extra knotch on the backside of it. Hard to be sure from the angle, but if so, that would be a IP-S'G' trigger.
The Hammer in it may be a SG or S'G', Marked near the bottom, where the pin runs thru.

P.S. My mistake asking about front bevel on the Inland Trigger Housing. Was thinking it may be the eary Type I housing, But it wouldn't have the WIDE magwall. Looks as though it's a Type II. Sorry.... Bed Time Here !
