1917 JA Barrel?

Hi All
I just found what looks like a NOS 1917 JA barrel. It has been cleaned of all the cosmo and has the remains of a mil type paper wraper on it. What is a good price on this?

The last JA replacement barrel I saw NIW was priced at $170. That was at Louisville KY Show of Show's three years ago. I would suspect a NOS would bring close to $250 to $300 at this point with all of the CMP rifles running around w/ nasty bores. Just my opinion...

It is the other way around. What does the guy want for it. I dumped my JA Barreled M1917 as the barrel would "pop" over at around 35 rounds fired. Very much too much for match shooting. The HS barrels are superb.

Put it on Gun broker,or Ebay,and find out.You may be surprised.I would start at 150-170.

Would you take dimension of:
chamber breach face to barrel shoulder
OD of the threads
and the diameter of the barrel thread root.

This might be compared against NOS original manufactures measurement and help understand the "receiver cracking" when "JA" barrel were used to re-barrel
actions.

wow,
iv rebarreld countless 1917,s never ever seen one with a crack, and have yet to have to match face, or take a shoulder back on a GI replacement barrel.
i have had to take the shoulder back a bit on the new CMP barrels, they are way out of index..
if you know what your doing, youll not need the fancy machines to get it done.
only 2 military rifles i know used a JA barrel, the M1917 and the 1941 Johnson, and the Johnson simply has a colar threaded on an indexed up.
the dems are the same.

JA barrels dont cause cracking.IF damage was done ,it was caused by Eddystone over torquing the original barrel puting strain on the receiver.If a relief cut is made just ahead of the receiver the torque is lessened,and the barrel comes off without putting undue pressure on the receiver.The JA barrel is then installed using just enough torque to line up witness marks.

i agree with some of what you said,
however,
if you want to save, and maybe resell the old barrel, cutting the shoulder will sure take care of that.
as hard as it sounds, a new pipe wrench will remove a barrel easy enough, and you can turn the wrench marks easy enough..
but, be careful, 17,s are real soft, and easy to tweek, they are only surfaced hadended.
they are very strong, but tweek easy..
i was tought to cut the shoulder, but found that that ruins the barrel for any real future use.
later this week, ill post some how to in a hot tips post. ill be removing a barrel from a 17 and installing a CMP made barrel back on.

this post is a good example of why i dont cut the shoulder.
barrel may have been usable for something other then a jack handle, had they not cut it.

Chuck, I've got a question for you. Is there a ring inside a P14 or P17 receiver as there is with a Mauser receiver for the barrel to seat on. I got this Obermeyer heavy target barrel off gunbroker for $10, wanted to build a P14 into a 6mm/30-40 Ackley Improved, but a gunsmith here in IN tells me I'd only have about .050 barrel/receiver shoulder and that it should be more. I'd guess the barrel came off a Rem 700. I guess the question is, does the barrel seat on a ring inside the receiver, or is it completely dependent on the receiver/barrel shoulder? If the P14 won't work, I might use a T38 Arisaka action.
