    Short, short Model 98

Was recently following an on-line estate sale and noticed this one.

Any ideas on what it is? It looks verrryy short, and vaguely Czechicon. Not sure what to make of the stock. Description says it is marked with dot and 43, with waffenamps.

While there are several experimental very short carbine versions of the 98 known, this looks to be a homegrown mod, perhaps a partizan cut down of a captured rifle.
Russianicon partizans even shortened the SVT auto rifles to make easy to hide carbines.

From the hex head nut and sanded stock its as likely a bubba.

Not all such cutdowns are bubbas though. There are cutdown MAS rifles that were a comercial venture, I've examined one of those which had an aftermarket thum safety, the original had no safety. Some of those may have been issued to female VC and as NVA training rifles.

The caliber/chambering was not mentioned, but I would not want to fire that thing in any cailber other than .22!

This looks like the Mauser equivalent to the notorious Enfield "Tanker" carbine. I.e. Alfred is spot on IMO. Heaven knows where the bits came from. And I think I can see turning marks on the bolt, in that shiny new finish.

Anyone who still places a value on stamps, when you can already order mixmaster K98ks with the stamp of your choice (in fact, you can even order stamps) is welcome to the results.

Shooting value nil. Historical value nil. Collector value - whatever someone will pay for it.

I heard of shortened kar98ks somewhere before, but the only Mauser I could find in my book of Mausers that looks vaguely similar is one of the Greek knock-offs which is almost as short. But still looks different in every other way.
