    civil war uniform reproduction ???

A friend I used to work with just called me. He was cleaning out a house where the occupants went to a nursing home or passed away. He found a confederate uniform. How would you determine if it is a reproduction. If it is a repro it is from the 1950s because he has a picture of the occupant wearing it his front yard. also he was told that the occupant had a great grandfather was in the civil war. he told me that it is heavy wool no labels a few moth holes. the buttons were made by a button company in Waterbury cont and he said researched the button company and they were around in the 1860s. he also told me that buttons from the company were purchased through Englandicon for the confederacy. is a a butternut color and has the gold braiding on the sleeves

Your best bet is to take some detailed pictures of it and send them via email or regular mail to the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond. I wouldn't hold out a lot of hope that it is an original, however. Gold braid was only used on officer's uniforms, 99.9% of which were grey, not butternut. But give it a try. You may have something very rare and valuable.
