I received a barreled receiver from CMP about 3 months ago, the barrel was shot but the receiver looks to be in decent shape. I took it to my local gunsmith and after weeks of trying he was unable to remove the barrel from the receiver. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get this barrel off?

Don't know what equipment your gunsmith has, or how familiar he is w/ these, but its usually not a big deal, even when rusty. Worst case, cut the barrel just in front of the receiver, and then set the receiver in a milling machine to bore the remainder out to just under the minor thread diameter. Probably NOT required, I suspect.

If the barrel is toast then put the barreled in the lathe. Measure .003 to .005 from the receiver face and use a parting tool to remove the barrel shoulder. By doing this you remove all shoulder load. Now only the thread load is holding the barrel.

Tech Tip. I always do this if the barrel is toast. It greatly reduces the chance of twisting a receiver.

Quite right, JBS. Just don't cut through all the way at first! Its a technique more common to M1917s, but it may apply here also.

Those guys are absolutely correct. It's something that can almost be done with minimum equipment but the good stuff does work better.
