CMP Remington 40x

My 40x showed up today. I think I am very lucky, it's really nice. The pictured stock dings are the worst there are. The bluing looks geally good. I couldn't be happier.

Does anyone know if the W A is the date code? What is the M F? I believe that the date of manufacture would be Aug. 1954, if W A is the code. I didn't think these were produced until 1955. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think A M is the date code. A= March M=1965 nice rifle.

Do you have any idea what the W and the F represent.

I find Remington date codes difficult to decode. It seems like there are alway more letters than there should be. As in this case there is a W, an A, an M, and then an F. How does a guy know which letters are the date code.

Sorry, I didn't do this right. Anyway there is a thread over on the CMP Smallbore on decoding the markings. Looks like the "W" is an inspectors mark.

Looks like it could also be 1980 (my guess!) or (not likely)2006 vintage.

The link provided in the post above by mw1213 shows how to read the code. So it does look like the code is A M. The A would then be March.

jmoore, In the first link on your post, the year would be 1965. If you look at the second link's chart, it also shows an M for 1992.

I have this same post on other sites and many seem to believe that the date is March 1965.

Ok, then! I've got a friend who ciphers all the Remington stuff for me. Most of my target .22s are Winchesters, but I've shot a 40x or two. Nice rifles.

Thanks again for the links. I think a guy just has to figure out what years a rifle was manufactured, then the date code charts should make sense.

Nice to know that they shoot good. I'll have to get out and do some shooting.

I don't know what your plans for the rifle are. They are sought after by many rimfire bench rest shooters. They are a fine rifle and I think it is great you have one, I envy you. Good shooting....Slim
