    I heard back re fluting;
    No fluting for the .303, as it was not necessary.

    They're not fluted because they're SMLE barrels.

    Regarding the earlier comment about why not rechamber the original barrels: I imagine that had to do with the supply of SMLE barrels and the fact that if you shorten the gas system, you'd have the original port to deal with, as well as the threaded end of the barrel to clean up.

    I imagine it was much cheaper to use the SMLE barrel.

    Globe also did a "bargain" sporter SVT. They chopped the barrel and barrel extension off and dovetailed a Lyman sight into the gas block. These were left in the original 7.62x54R. I've got one of these versions.

    Have also considered trying a 7.62x51 conversion, but I think it would just end up a funny looking L1a1/FAL/FN49 after buckets of work.

    I think the rimmed to rimless conversion would be a pile of work.

    I know a guy who did an FN49 .308 conversion. I believe he started with a shot out Egyptian model and used a take-off Remington 700 barrel. When he was finished you couldn't tell it was a conversion by the outside appearance. It worked very well, too.

    Argentinian FN49s in 7.62x51 showed up a few years back, but I'm just not a big enough fan of the rifle to buy one. (Maybe a 7mm...) M1s and M14icon/M1a's do what I want so much better.

    Still, a semi-303 that doesn't weigh 10kg or so would be fun. Not gotten the gumption, yet, to try converting an SMLE to autoloader.

    I found the Frenchicon Mas 44-49 49/56. Excellent. I also found the 7.5 French cartridge better than NATO or 303. Better case capacity for lower pressure tuning. OF course I use Norma components. Gary

    Not that rare in Canadaicon, but certainly interesting.

    Globco Mohawk 555

    Sorry guys, I know this thread is dreadfully old. Does anyone know if this .303 is still for sale?

    I'm scouring the internet looking for one. I know that the Globco is not the greatest but I really want one

    I don't know if it sold or not. A few month ago there was another, or perhaps the same one, listed for sale. It didn't reappear so maybe it sold. At least they're around. I bet they got a work out during the deer culling from helicopter days.
