    Stuck Clip Latch Pin--Ideas?

This is on initial takedown of recently-received SG HRA. Overall a reasonable example of a SG, but the Greeks did give it the dunk in that tank of black stuff--I think it is some kind of blueing. Result is that the clip latch pin is pretty much fused along the 2 7/8" where it travels through the clip latch. Bent a couple of small punches trying to drift it out.

Any ideas for this? The spring action (in all of its black Greek glory) still seems robust enough to give good function, but there will come a day when it needs to be serviced. On that day I am thinking it will be necessary to drill or mill the clip latch out in pieces, pin and all, and then start over with a new latch and pin. So probably the thing to do is get a latch and pin on hand now. But this has to be a somewhat common problem so I'd love to hear how others have solved it. Thanks.

The Greeks stuck it to me the same way. I soaked it in Kroil for a few days, warmed it carefully with a torch and managed to move it out about 1/8". At that point I was able to grab the pin with a small vise grip and tapping the vise grip with a small hammer got it out. Just work slow and careful.

I believe, without doing any research, that the 'black stuff' is paint. However, unless the clip latch needs replacing, I'd leave it alone.

Got it out. Not being blessed with a can of kroil on the shelf, I went with what I had--liquid wrench. Overnight soak, then 3 cycles of heating with respray of liquid wrench. I used a simple propane torch, held at about a 6" distance on low flame, with a thermocouple (temperature sensor) to monitor heat. Moving torch back and forth along length of clip latch, heated the part to 170-180 F. Punch got the pin started out pretty easy after that, but I still had to use a piece of rod stock to drift the pin out the entire length. It wasn't going to slide on its own.
