RE: I need a carbine gunsmith

I’ve been thinking about this thread for some time. I was the first responder, and felt that by offering a solution that didn’t require a gunsmith, it was understood that it would be saving him a little money. Plus, he’d have a tool that he could continue to use for as long as he “collected” carbines. And, I don’t think I was unfriendly. At least I certainly didn’t intend to be. I had no reason to be. I was as surprised as any of you at this person’s response.
I’m not one of the “old hands” from the other forum, but started lurking about the time the change-over was made. That makes me a newbie too. Did I ever think of this place as unfriendly??
Now serious thinking is a little outside of my area of expertise, but I asked myself if I ever thought “our” forum was truly unfriendly… And why, exactly did I decide on hanging out here. .
Well, first off, there wasn’t a group of guys who monopolized the conversations. But instead, there was/is quite a few of the “veterans” who were knowledgeable, and who didn’t mind passing along that info. No brow beating of newbies who asked some of the oft repeated questions. No chest beating braggadocios that I’ve seen on other spots….. Just a very measured, well thought out, respectful attitude toward each other, and their individual ideas/views. Even towards us newbies… When I asked if it might be of interest, I was even privately encouraged to do the series on Bavarian Carbines. How much more friendly can you get.
So, back to the thread in question. As far as I know, this is the first disparaging remark I’ve heard since joining nearly a year ago. I view it as simply an aberration. It does bother me some that we are thought that poorly of, but, you can’t please everybody…
My hope is that this forum will continue as before… Yep, maybe it’s a little slow for some, but while the sands of time grind exceedingly slow, they do grind exceedingly fine.

I agree entirely with JN. This is about the only forum I visit anymore. Occasionally I check some AK forums, but now only once a month. What is refreshing about this forum is no "mine is bigger (or better) than yours" that is so prevalent on most other forums. This is the most helpful bunch of guys I have ever found. Thanks, from me, at least. Keep up the wonderful work, guys.

Don't take it too hard. You bring up some valid points. Like I said in that thread, that person's behavior was that he wanted someone to solve his problem - NOW. If we didn't then we were to Blame for his problem.

There is a distinct difference between various forums. This one has its own flavor. The post here are not people wanting to show off, its more like conversation between friends - as we get to it. Other forums has so many people posting, that any new thread seems to have 10-15 comments within a hour - and thats ok. Here, well, life is just a little slower. Since everyone here came over from the OLD site before it crashed, I have never seen a newbie put down.. Heck, for all intent and purposes, I am still a newbie when it comes to carbine collecting.

Maybe the flavor here is "maturity"... ok, how about a scoop of "Maturity" with in a "friendliness" cone and "helpfulness" sprinkles on top?

Don't be bothered by it. We all know that if that guy comes back here, we would all be helpful and friendly - without expecting an apology from him.

    Just my two cents worth....

P.S. I understand that guy is still stuggling to deal with the front sight problem. Hope he gets it fixed soon....

Now that you mention it Tired, it IS friendlier than the old CSP forum. I started there and drifted away after about a year, (before the switch) then discovered this forum while Culvericon was down. I agree with the maturity part. I am 58, but think I am on the young side!

    Jim Nasium,

I had a few comments about that post also.
    Please read them here.....
Help needed for correct barrel for NPM - Military Surplus Collectors Forums

You'll see that some of the sharpest collectors in the field helped out, in a relative short manner. Not to mention the e-mails and PM's I received.

Personally I feel the forum here is a reflection of the bar that was set so high by Doug/Badger to make everyone who visits to feel at home.
Same way Milsurps stepped up and helped the other forum get back on their feet.

    Good Weekend To Ya'll,
    Charlie-painter777

I agree with everyone. I've reread the entire thread and can't figure out what set him off. However, if anyone needs a carbine gunsmith, let me know.

Ronni, I could not agree with you more. I wasn't a part of that thread, but I read it and was knocked back at his responce to the help and advice that he recieved. Not sure what he wanted, most of the people here do their own work on their carbines and know what they are doing. I have to get one of those sight pin tools, thanks for the link.....Frank

    rpw7351, will do!

    It's all Bill's fault

    Ron (AKA 'Jim')
(I still laugh at myself that I read your user name for so long and didn't catch the joke, and adrressed you as 'Jim'!)

Don't let it get to you. Most of the time when people respond like that, they either misunderstand, or are possibly having a bad day! He might have been frustrated at what he'd done, and had been reading other forums without any solutions and said more than he meant.
(Who knows what he meant, and it really isn't a big deal - we all have 'bad days' and it's sometimes easy to misinterpret the meanings in internet posts (from each side)

I read some of his other posts and he seemed like a pretty good guy.
I hope he's not too embarrassed by all of this and will continue to post again.

You're help and involvement to this forum is very much appreciated Ron -
I understand how you feel when someone 'writes and outburst' or comments like that. You wonder what you did, and take it personally. It's all a part of this written medium, without understood voice inflections. (It's only misunderstandings, most of the time)

We have a great group here and I'm proud to know you guys -
I greatly enjoy most all of the M1icon carbine enthusiasts I've met and know in 'real life'. Most of us have the same passion for these rifles and enjoy each others friendship. I think the one thing different about this carbine forum, is the gentlemen who congregate here show more respect for one another than many sites do. (Most all the 'Milsurp' forums are the same to a great extent) Most members here do not brag or carry on in other negative ways while hiding behind their monitors. Maybe we're a little slower, a little older, a little more laid back, etc than some carbine forums. Who knows why for certain why our group came to be, but this has become a great family to me.

    PS -
Regardless, I can see I won't be able to take off sick days anymore and leave Bill Hollinger in charge again!
I blame all of this disruption on him!

    (JMO as always)

I've known Jim/Ron's real name for awhile but it just recently occurred to me the joke he's pulled on us. Ron's good people....

Harlan, you seem to have done a good hack on the wi-fi system there.
Update us on your condition, OK? Charlie has a thread going on your behalf.....Keep us informed.....

Myself, I place any blame on Canadaicon.

I don't remember if I even commented on that thread, but if I had I'd likely try to point out that the guy had got the best advice from people I hold in respect for their knowledge in carbines.

Of all the forums I go onto (some gun related, some on other subjects too numerous to list) this board is the most respectful I've found. I'm sure the collection of at least a few here would make my meager collection look like child's play at collecting, but I've never seen anyone brag and try to make a person feel they were mere rookies at milsurps. Any question asked is dealt with in a more than civil manner, with advice from people who have forgotten more about these guns than some of us will ever learn. And ever a question that in some places would be considered a "stupid" question is answered in a respectful manner. I can't think of a time I came on here that I didn't learn at least a little, and that's tough for an old dog.

Bottom line is, I have never met any of you folks, but I'd love to have a chance to simply sit and absorb even a bit of the knowledge centered here. I'd be proud to call any of you a friend I've never had the chance to get to know personally. And if we ever meet, I'd be honored to have a chance to take a sit-down and buy you the beverage of your choice, and talk about a passion we all share.

You guys rock, I'm proud to be a small, uneducated part of this group!

I've read some posts by the guy who asked the original question on the CMPicon board, he got similar advice in about the same amount of time there, and had the decency to not try to insult anyone there. Whether he knew he'd be booted quicker than a fly goes to sugar over there or not if he had done so there, I don't know. He might be a helluva nice guy, having a bad day after starting a project and having problems, venting because he didn't get a quick and cheap solution. Or he might be a problem child who expects someone to rescue him from his own lack of experience. Don't know, don't care. But his reaction to people who offered excellent advice in a timely manner, trying to save him money without ruining his carbine didn't sit well with me. And I'd tell him the same if I had the chance.

Lots of folks on line tend to forget you can disagree with people without becoming disagreeable. I consider a lot of the internet the modern version of the CB radio. At first in that technology, people were respectful of others, and didn't try to show they lacked social skills. As it progressed, it turned into a place decent people didn't frequent anymore. Let's pray we can keep our little half acre of the internet free of those kinds of people.
