    swedish mauser: a carbine?

I have recently accquired a swedish mauser that I cannot identify. All the numbers match but the previous owner puttied up the stock sling holes and the disk hole. The rifle says carl gustafs stads gevarsfaktori 1917. the barrel is alittle over 17" long. The stock is 27" from the butt to the front forearm. There is no handguard. The rear sight has a 16 at the top in the middle of the sight. The front sight has on the left side +0s. I would like to find another military stock to keep it original as possible. The serial number is 88700. The finger groove on the sides of the stock are about 4 1/2 inches. Thanks

Check the various entries and photo montages in the Sweden - Milsurp Knowledge Library (click here)

    Does it look like this?

1899 M38B (M96/38) Swedish Mauser Short Rifle (Mfg by Carl Gustafs Stads Gevarsfaktori) ..... (click here)

    ... or this?

1907 m94/14 Swedish Carbine (Mfg by Carl Gustafs Stads Gevarsfaktori) ..... (click here)

The M96/38 has a 23" barrel, whereas the m94/14 has roughly a 17" barrel, so I suspect you probably have the latter, which can be very valuable (if all correct) to a collector.

Post pics, or if you don't know how, email them to me and I'll post them for you.

    Badger

Here's an update to this thread with pics that Terry sent me via email.

I m pretty sure it's an m94/14 that has been sporterized at some point. The forestock has been hacked off, but the rest of it appears correct, including the sling attachment on the butt. The barrel doesn't appear to have been cut back and the rear sight appears correct. The bolt matches and it would be interesting to strip it and find out if all of the bolt components including the firing pin match. Finally, the butt plate and various other parts should have the last 3 digits of the serial number "700" on them as well.

To verify its originality, I need to check the manufacturing date and serial number against the listings shown in the book:

"Crown Jewels - The Mauser in Swedenicon" by Dana Jones - ISBN: 0-88935-283-6.

    Attachment 1409

I'm traveling for a few days, so I'll try to do that when I get back. If anyone else has this book, than perhaps thay can validate that data sooner for Terry's carbine.

In good condition and "all correct", these carbines can sell for over a $1,000 and I've seen them at auction and on U.S. gun sites advertised for up to $1,500. Unfortunately, even if this one is in the correct serial number range, she will still need a lot of loving restoration care to restore value. In her current stare, I think she's not much more than a "parts gun".

    Regards,
    Badger
