I need a replacement stock for Springfield Armory 1903

Previous owner put a new stock on my 1903 just before selling it to me. Said the original was only good for firewood. I do not know the make of the new stock, and don't think I have any recourse back to the seller.
As is the rifle shoots consistently 10 a 12" to the right of point of aim at 100 yards. One gunsmith determined that the fore-stock is pressing on the left side of the barrel, suggesting this is the reason for consistent point of impact to the right of point of aim. He suggests a new stock.

Another very knowledgable smith examined a bit further, and determined the stock was manufactured improperly, in that the bedding area for the receiver is mis-aligned with the channel for the barrel. In his opinion repair is not possible, and again, says I need a new stock.

So...having one faulty replacement stock already, I am wary of where I can find and buy another one that will be correctly made.

I surely would welcome suggestions for a quality stock maker!

    Thanks in advance.

I'm curious, is your defective stock a sporter type stock? Is it an old USGI replacement stock or is it a newly made commercial military style stock?

Do you have any pictures of the defect, are there any markings on the outside or the inside of the stock identifying the maker?

What kind of stock are you looking for Military?, Sporter?.

    Dad...
Thanks for stepping up to the plate to help this guy!
    Allred,
Mr. D has some good questions... I am also curious if there is a problem in the receiver to barrel fit. Maybe this would be a good situation to glass bed the rifle.
As Mr. D. and I have talked back n forth, the CMPicon stocks (military config) look pretty good.
If you are looking for a sporter, stocks abound from various makers.
The last REAL 1903 stock that I bid on, went VERY high (JMHO) on Ebay.

Midmichigun - I remember the stock you bid on, that price was rediculous. Must have been two guys having a bidders war.

Heres the previous post by Dad - nice pics - CMP M1903 finger groove stock

The CMP stocks are made by Boyds. I have one of the 1903 finger groove stocks made by them. It is unfinished. An action drops right in nicely. It will only need a little outside sanding for wood to metal fit. The ones that CMP offers are oil finished and look nice with matching handguards. They are reasonably priced considering what a beat to snot original costs.

It appears the CMP is currently sold out. Stock Sets

Boyds has them listed but no pics. You might try contacting both companies. BOYDS The World's Foremost Supplier of Hardwood Gunstocks.

It looks like Dupage might be the way to go - Available Rifle Stocks such as hand guards, trophy grips, low Wall stock, butt stock, sniper stock for sale.

    Mike,
Thanks for the link. I was looking at Dupage, but didn't find the 1903 stocks when I looked... must be going blind! Probably comparable to CMPicon stock sets (which comes with handguard?). I do like the price!

10to 12 inches off at 100 yards??thats a bit more then stock pressure, id bet a bent barrel is more likely the case.
avoid reproduction parts. including wood... if GI..spend the money and get the real deal...and save the fit time of a poorly made reproduction.

The defective stock appears to be a new, military style replacement. There are no markings on the exterior of any kind. I am reasonably sure that it is not a GI issue stock. I should be getting the rifle back from the gunsmith today or tomorrow, and will then post a picture or two.

Note added, the defective stock is a "scant" style semi - pistol grip.

What I want is a military style stock, to make this rifle a good shooter for vintage military competition, formal and informal.

    Thanks for your suggestions.

    Allred,
I agree with chuckindenver in that your problem could be caused by a mechanical issue with your weapon other than excessive stock pressure.
    What year is your 1903?
There are a number of stocks in eBay, but they are going to be expensive and will need a lot of TLC to make them look halfway decent.
I might be worth it to you to send the weapon to chuckindenver for a look see or at least speak with him about your problem before you spend a lot of money "fixing the wrong problem"....

a bent barrel is a fixable issue, if its not been shot to death, clean your bore well, look down the bore with a light pole or door frame in the center for a line. and look to see if it lines up.
also look for a dark spot on the left side some place down the bore.
sometimes you can feel the bend with a light oiled patch that fits tight, and pushed slowly through...
as iv posted before, avoid repro stocks and other parts, spend the extra money on quality original GI parts,. see my post in regards to reporduction bits.

Barrel likely, but may want to to check the rear sight & collar for loseness or rotation.
