    sling treatment and storage

i just picked up a type 99 first series and it came with an original sling that is supple, what should i put on it and how often to keep it this way. i also noticed that both swivels are rusted because it has been on the rifle for all these years absorbing moisture. should i take it off while in the safe and keep it in a bag with an ID

    thanks
