1903 national match star gauge code stamp on barrel

New member here. Site looks informative. Hello all....

I just started looking at the detail of national match springfield rifles.

Is there any key to the stampings of the star gauge codes?

There was a star gage card with the bore dimensions recorded on it that came with the rifle or star gaged barrel. The number on the card corresponded with the number on the barrel. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason as to how the number was selected.

Thanks. That seems to be what I got from the books.

I am new to this rifle and I need more info. Some of the books conflict also.

This is a replacement barrel with Star Gage record card for an NRA Sporter ordered from Springfield Armory.

Thanks. I will see if I get this with the rifle. It is a 1924 date rifle.

    Yes.

The code consists of an alphabetical letter followed by a 1-4 digit number below.

The letter identifies the inspector and the number is a sequential number starting with 1 and running up, in some cases, to almost 6000. In most cases, each inspector has the same number sequence starting with 1 and running up from there. But, in some cases, the number sequence periodically resets to 1 and starts over again. But I am unable to discern the basis for the reset pattern.

    Hope this helps.

The star gage record shown was signed by R. W. Barris.

This is more than I knew before I asked and after going over the usual books.

    Thanks,

    Johnny,

What is the date on your barrel? I already have a new-in-the-tube barrel like yours in my data base, manufactured on the same Work Order Number. Please advise.

    Thanks!

It is probably the same one I sent you the data on. Without pulling it out of the tube, I believe it is dated 1-38. The Star Gage record card is dated 2-11-38. It also came with the original sales receipt.
