    Marking on my carbine sight

Just noticed an H inside of a shield on my rear sight. Right side. The sight is unmarked otherwise.

The sight happens to be on a Plainfield carbine, if that helps

Winchester used a milled and a stamped rear sight with an H in a shield. (6 into 7 million range) Hemphill Mfg. Co. Pawtucket, R.I.

Jim; My 5.6 Win has a stamped Hemphill that appears to have been on it since day one. I believe that they started using them sporadically in spring 44 mixed with flips as they came in. A lot of other 5.6 Wins like this.

    Dave,

I know they were a bit earlier. War baby says later 6 to 7. Riesch says 5.7 for milled 6.45 for pressed. Newsletters have shown different dates over the years.

My point was even though it was on a Plainfield it could be a real USGI sight.

    I have:

    5.6 with a square S leaf sight
5.6 with milled H in shield (transition time?)
5.7 with pressed H in shield (not in the reported 6.45 range)

Plainfields in some cases had all-G.I. parts on a Plainfield receiver. I don't think there is such a thing as a non-G.I. Hemphill rear sight. Inland also used these very late after previously using the 'H.I.' (Hemphill for Inland) milled sights. They're also found on many rebuilds of all makers.
