After you have removed all of the finish (varnish, shellac, etc.) and are down to the unadorned wood and remnants of stain, mix the Oxalic Acid wood bleach with hot water per the instructions on the container and commence to scrubbing the wood. Allow the wood to dry between applications and to sit in the sun, if possible while drying.....it will become lighter with each application. When the desired result has been achieved, wash the wood with a mixture of clean hot water and vinegar to neutralize the effects of the acid and allow it to dry FOR AT LEAST 48 HOURS. You can then start applying whatever finish you want. I was a furniture refinisher for many years and they don't call the wood on guns "furniture" for nothing........lol. Butch

With so much going on and not enough hours in the day I managed to get in the workshop to clean up, (got to a point I couldn't see the workbench)n the Oxalic Acid Crystals have sat there for sometime, and while busy with the clean up thought I,d give it a try, just a pity I never got a before pic, have to admit I thought I was flogging a dead horse but the results are exceptional, will post a pic when it dries and the camera is charged, but have to take my hat off to Brownwater for pointing me in the right direction.

Pics below after it had dried the areas were the pens are were the worst, both these had big stains about the size of a fist with drips coming off etc, no sign of them now just a slight bit on the edge of cutout for the sight protector.
