Hello, I'm reloading for my Model 38 Mosin Nagant and I have a set of RCBS FL size dies, I read once that if you back out the die about a turn / turn and a half, it will size only the neck. Is that true because I'd like to try neck sized brass to see if there is any improvement in accuracy / consistency. any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

I can´t understand how this works. If you back out the full-sizer die, it can only size the rest (top) of the neck. Surely you need a special neck sizer die to size the full extent of the neck?

I’m not very technical, but that is exactly what happens.
I only size (part of) the neck so I can seat another bullet.
The rest of the case fits the chamber perfectly.
That is also why I always use the same cases in the same rifle/carbine.

OK, Martin. Thanx for clearing that one up! How about getting a neck sizer die and keeping the full-sizer for when you need to push the shoulder back? I´m having to full size my .308 cases again as they´ve begun sticking in the chamber. They´ve been reloaded about five times, but the chamber is tight as the rifle has been re-barreled and the chamber is no longer mil spec. I suppose it´s a lot tighter.
If the full length sized cases enter your chamber OK, they should enter OK after firing with only neck sizing. I reloaded the .22-250 for years, starting when it was a wildcat and you had to neck down .250 Savage brass, and I usually got 10 to 12 loading before the necks started to split. The only time they were full length sized was when they were initially necked down.
For my .308 bolt gun I use a Wilson hand die which neck sizes only. After about 5 firings I must go back and full length size as I start to get some resistance when I chamber the round.

I FL size my cases once every 20 times and adjusting the die is a matter of minutes.
I guess the Mosin Nagant chamber is more forgiving.
Also the fact that I use reduced loads helps to prolong the life of my brass.

I own a Dutch Steyr Mannlicher M95 in cal. 6.5x53.5R.
I use .303 British cases as a parent case and reform them to 6.5mm Dutch.
I have to push the shoulder back quit a bit and the result of this is that after 15 to 20 times reloading necks are starting to split.
This happens when I use reduced loads (13.8 gn of VihtaVuori N110) and a cast bullet.
A couple of years ago, when I loaded the cases with a full load (34gn of VihtaVuori N140) and a FMJ bullet, necks started to split after 8 to 10 times reloading.
I never FL size the Dutch cases, I only neck size using the FL die set.
From left to right:
1) .303 parent case
2) Reformed from .303 to 6.5mm
3) Case sized back to 53.5mm
4) Original Dutch case
