    Aftermarket Jungle Carbine

    Hey Guys,

On another forum I am a member of there is a aftermarket jungle carbine for sale. By this he means one that was converted after import by old navy arms out of a no 4. He is asking $400 for it shipped. I am not really interested, just curious...how fair is this price? Its in pretty darn good shape but that seems a bit high to me...

I'd suggest half that price. You can get a nice original rifle for $400 or even a bit less.

That means that is is NOT a Jungle Carbine (Rifle, No.5 Mk.1), it's cropped and chopped No.4. Real No.5s were were built as such from the ground up, not converted from No.4s.

Yes I knew that. That is why I was not interested.

Newcastle, do you have a link to that recent sale? It would be interesting to see its condition. Prices are way off from what they were three years ago and it may be that prices have taken the kind of beating. The economy has hurt all historical arms prices.

I agree with Steve H, the rifle is worth perhaps $200 as it is nothing more than a conversion from a No. 4. Would be nice to own while you searched for the genuine article. The only ones that suffer worse are the Navy Arms conversions to what they termed a "Tanker" model. You can't give those away, judging from gunshow prices I have seen in recent years.

These converted guns are right up there with "tanker Garands". They make lovely doorstops and that's about it. Whatever collector value was there is ruined and they aren't even great shooters. So in the end, unless you're into historical reenactments and don't want to beat up a perfectly good historical rifle, then there really is no use for them. Save your money and get a real one.
