    Remington UMC U.S.M.C.

I saw a reference on another site to an old gunbroker auction where a remington umc 1911 from the Charles Duffy collection was claimed to be a USMC issued pistol per the R.L. Wilson book of colt. The serial# on the pistol was 47 which is very close to mine serial #52. I have not been able to find any other references to this anywhere. If anybody else has info on where the early serial number umc's were shipped to it would be appreciated.

I think the reference in the R. L. Wilson book "The Colt Heritage" is either a mis-print, typo, or really bad information. On table 11 in the back of the book he has this information under 1918 production:

    Remington USMC 1- 13152

    Under 1919 production:

    Remington USMC 13153 - 21676

At that time the Remington name was Remington UMC, and this is on the slide of the pistols.

Thank you sir, that makes perfect sense. UMC and USMC would be an easy typo. Is there any info out there as to when serial# 52 would have shipped and to which facility?

There are no shipping records for Remington-UMC. More than likely it would have gone to Springfield Armory.

Do you think arsenal or civilian refinish? Grips frame and slide look correct from the pictures, but I won't be able to tell about the rest until I get in my hands.

If arsenal refinished it would have mixed parts, as no attempt was made to keep the original parts together. The pistols were torn down, and all the parts went their separate ways to be refinished. When put back together, random parts were used. Possibly a restoration using refinished parts.
