I've been shooting the RCBS 465-480 as cast by Western in my Martini Henrys for years. While I now own the mold, I still use Western's bullets when shooting for score, since they are far better casters than I. .465 Caliber

As listed they are sized to .466 with a smokeless lube, which works just fine if you use a good sized grease cookie. However you can also ask for them unsized/unlubed and hand lube them yourself. Either way they work well.

I was thinking of shooting a minimal load at first .smokless. While my new mk4 looks amazingling good I need to work up very carefully.

Loading smokeless in the 577/450 is an advanced skill and can be an exercise in frustration. This is a black powder cartridge and to start off blackpowder is the best way to go.

Lee has made a number of custom Martini moulds. If you are willing to pay premium price for a $20 mould go for it.

Both RCBS and CBE make proper Martini .468 diameter. CBE even has one for .470 diameters. The CBE mould with postage from Australiaicon will cost the same as the RCBS with out postage. The RCBS mould is available from Buffalo Arms Buffalo Arms Company|Over 8,000 Black Powder Cartridge Rifle|Cowboy Guns|Reloading supplies|Related Items!
, Contact CBE at CAST BULLET ENGINEERING - Home
    as mentioned above.

My knowledge of black power is zero. Can you load ultra light with it or say Pyrodex ?
    Many thanks

You don't want a lot of air space with BP and you want NONE with Pyrodex. There really is no reason to go way light on these. Either the MH is safe to shoot or it isn't and frankly accuracy generally will go south in a hurry below 70 grains of BP. Use a non-melting fiber fill such as cotton, carded wool or kapok to take up excess space in the cartridge. Granulated fillers in a bottleneck cartridge like the 577/450 is a big no no.

THank you for the information. you saved me from buying a bottle of Puf-lon I would use just enough cotton/kapok etc to hold the charge against the base of the cartridge? I have a problem imagining the filler burning fast enough to not create excess pressures.

    Many thanks
