    Michigan State Police Choose M1A1

Found this posted on another forum by a fellow resident here in the "Murder Mitten".
I live about 8 miles from the old Police Training Bureau that was located in East Lansing, MI.

This article was published in 1957 in a Michigan State Police monthly publication entitled, "POST-ER".
The MSP adopted the rifle after a bank robbery in Jackson, MI and a long interstate pursuit of the felons. The end result being One MSP Trooper killed and another wounded in a gunfight. The felons fled to the State of Indiana where an Indiana State Trooper was killed in another gunfight and a second Trooper was wounded before the felons were apprehended. At the time, the MSP had nothing to penetrate the skin of a vehicle except for a 30.06 bolt action which wasn't practical for the confined space in a vehicle.

Note in the article, "It is the first semi automatic weapon the Department has ever used"

It looks like the one on the left is sans bayonet lug. The antenna may have already gotten shot off of the '57 Ford!

Murder Mitten? Another reason those of us north of Saginaw wish those south of Saginaw would let us northerners form our own state.

First I'd heard of it when my Daughter returned home here in Michigan from Naval training in San Antonio 2 days ago. She said most all her ship mates called us the Murder Mitten.
I must say.... Daddy's little girl has learned to swear so creatively.

    Cheers,

It looks like an antenna, but it isn't. That is the rear leg of the "Stop-State Police" sign that Michigan puts on the hoods of their cruisers.
