    Looking to buy a 1911

I wm looking to buy my first 1911 Would love to get a USGI one but that seems to be way out of my budjet. What of the billions of differnt ones is the one to get. My budjet is topped out at $550ish right now. I want as close as I can get to a basic GI 45 and as realiable as I can get.

Springfield makes a nice one in your price range. Also Remington (R1 I believe) came out with a new one in the past year or so that is nice too. I just looked at a Colt 1911A1 today that is a series 80 called a 1991 that was $600. This would be a good choice too. Just go to one of your local gunshows or a pawnshop in your area and keep your eyes open. One will turn up, just don't get in too big a hurry because there are lots of them out there.

Duane's right. We had this discussion a while back about Auto Ordnance and a great deal of info came out. Maybe just check that thread out.

I purchased a Remington R1 for Christmas. I love it. Ive put 300 rounds through it since and have not had a single misfire or misfeed. Ive shot 3 different brands of ammo. If you know a person with an FFL you can get one for around your price range. I payed around that for mine through a friend who has an FFL. They sell retail around $700 otherwise. Buy the Remigton and live worry free.

I have to get hand on but I do like the looks of the Springfield. I am trying to keep as close to the look of a USGI model. I will search for the Auto Ordinance Thread. any more feedback will be much appreciated as it seems a bunch of new models have come out recently.

I was gifted an R1 for retirement and it shoots very well, but what I paid for it in early December and what they want now is about a $100 more.

I just saw and held the R1 and it is nice there was another one their that was made in the Philippians in the 400+ range but I didn't get the name? Looked at a few Spingfields (not GI) and a customer told me they were discontinuing their GI model?? I'm going to try and find a WWII rebuilt first cause I want to shoot it but the market seems good for the replicas.

Here is my Philippine made High Standard that I bought at Cabela's about two years ago for just under $500 out the door. It has fed and ejected everything flawlessly, 230gr FMC, 230gr SWC, 180gr HP and the 200gr SWC you see in the picture, and is more accurate than I am. Like you, I wanted it to be as close to the original 1911a1 as possible but I also wanted reliable. I added the military grips (E-Bay, $8.00) and the ribbed mainspring housing and magazine from SARCO (cheap). It came with a very nice eight round Italianicon made magazine but it looked odd on the gun to me. You can see in the pictures the slightly larger ejection port and beveled magazine entry, it also comes with the feed ramp shaped and polished. The ejection port and feed ramp likely contribute to its reliability. Although I haven't heard anything horrible about any of the after market 1911 clones, I really like this one. Regards Tom
