03 springfield
I have an '03 Springfield that belonged to my dad. He bought it from the Rock Island Arsenal in November of '47 while he was in the Air Force. I have the letter he wrote requesting information on purchasing the rifle, a list from the Arsenal on who can buy surplus equipment, the shipping invoice ,and the receipt for the rifle. The serial no.(1324xxx) indicates the rifle was manufactured in 1929. The barrel is marked [ S A (bomb)9-38]. It has not been kept in a hermetically sealed case, so it has a few bumps and bruises and needs a major cleaning. I've attached some photo's. Comments please.

You have a very nice keeper there. Lots of late 1938/39 barrels were National Match barrels. Please post a photo of the muzzle. Is there an asterisk at 6:00 o'clock on the muzzle?

No asterisk. I'll post more photo's after I clean it. (embarrassment factor)

You have an excellent keepsake and the documentation adds significantly to the value.

Also, if you remove the top handguard, there may be an Alpha/Numeric marking just ahead of the rear sight. If the Star Gage mark on the muzzle crown has worn off, the other marking would confirm a NM barrel.

I check the area under the hand guard and found a 'P' on the top of the barrel and a '1 B' on the right side just below the 'P'. Also a number on the right side under the sight. 0 63934. Photo's soon.

Doesn't sound like a NM to me. It is a real keeper, however.

Definitely a keeper! Could you post photos of the paperwork, too? Thanks, Mike
