    L39A1 at auction recently

Was watching an L39A1[I] on an auction recently, hoping against hope that the price wouldn't go through the roof. Alas...it went for $2K

    Attachment 31408Attachment 31409Attachment 31410

    Description advised:
Britishicon L39A1 Bolt Action Rifle, #UE.70.A762, .308 cal., 27-1/2'' medium-weight barrel, without sights, black apoxy finish, light birch stock, brass buttplate. Top area of stock at wrist marked ''762''. Dating from the early 1970s. Condition is excellent retaining approx. 99% original black apoxy finish. Looks like its been refinished by someone.

It would be interesting to see a close-up of the markings....

Looks honest to me. probably a Navy Arms import from the early 1990's.

Anyone any idea what the 792 might be for on the butt?

Seems expensive. I bought mine within the last year, with a complete set of sights (front and back) and an extra sterling magazine for 1300. Deals are still out there, especially in North America where frankly, despite what we are being told the economy is really bad for anyone who is not in the upper classes.

I think that is a "762"..which is a reminder to the shooter that this is chambered in 7.62 x 51 rather than .303 caliber.

I didn't have a good handle on its value, so you could well be correct. I do have a good handle on what I can afford, however, and this was past that amount.

Ha - really? In addition to the 7.62 mm on the side of the receiver and the fact that it looks a bit different to the number 4? Some people must be a bit absent minded...

Ok then, Prinz...where do you see a "792" on the butt?

The lowest cost L39A1 rifle I have seen sell in the past 5 years went for 1,200 dollars. With the poor economy I would see a complete rig with sights going in the 1500 region on gun broker. Calfed, if you are looking for a clone or a AJP built up rifle, these do sell for less, on the order of 750 to 850 dollars. Joe Salter had a No4 MK II eqivilent rifle with the Enfield hammer forged barrel made up into a close to L39A1 type rifle (you would have to add a cut down forend to get the rifle correct for around 750 dollars. A similar rifle with a nice target stock but with the L42 front sight went for about 685 dollars on Gunbroker recently.

If you do not have the cash for the real thing you could put something together very close for around 750, as long as you are willing to do a little stock work yourself to make the forend and front handguard. You don’t even need a Enfield barrel, buy a good Krieger Palma barrel with the .297/.307 bore dimension and assembling it using any Fazakerly post war action. I did one for a friend using a beat up MKII forend, made the metal insert for king screw and made the hand guard buy mating two No 4 rear hand guards together, I have enough of the one guard to complete two more guards. Except for the markings and the front sight base, you could not tell it apart.

The problem is that L39A1 rifles are not that common, I think something like 384 were imported by Navy arms and a few more drifted south from Canadaicon. Given that less than 1400 were made total, if you want the markings on the side of the action body there is no cheap way around paying the man.

The "762" on the butt is just a rack number reminder - "A762" is actually the number of the rifle, according to the description.

If someone has gone to the effort of applying a number to the butt, then that rifle is definitely refurbished and is not mint. I have a genuine unused L39A1 complete with its Donnington stickers and tags, and my rifle is not flawless satin (spray-on?) black like the rifle in the OP. These rifles have been knocking around for 40+ years, even if unfired. They all exhibit handling and racking marks in the suncorite finish - especially on the exposed edges.
