Remington 1903A3 Serial numbers, barrel date

    Hello,

My friend's Remington 03A3 has the serial number 4,097,XXX, and a Remington barrel dated 9-43. I found this:
    RA3 40969xx RA 9-43
    RA3 40975xx RA 8-44 2g
    RA3 409792x RA 12-43
    RA3 4098281 RA 11-43
    RA3 4098456 RA 11-43 4g
    RA3 40989xx RA 9-43

    Here: http://www.vishooter.net/RA3.txt

Do you think that my friend's rifle is correct, meaning that it has not been rebarreled? It seems to be very near the numbers for the correct date, but I would like some opinions from people who know their Springfields (I do not). If you need any more info I will try to get it to you.
    Thanks,
    Jim

9-43 and 12-43 were VERY popular months for Barrels. It sounds like it could be.

You might look on another part of Vishooter's website which lists the dates of manufacture - this is just a data base of reported rifles. Your friends barrel sounds correct.

Is this what you were referring to? For Remington 03A3:
    Sep 3955409
    Oct 4023778
    Nov 4088927
    Dec 4147887

That looks like my friends is 1-2 months away or so, is that close enough to say its correct? Thanks for the help.[COLOR="black"]

Also, the bolt has several R markings, the stock is marked RA close to a marking FJA, and there are markings SS and OG on the butt. Do those tell you anything? Also, all visible parts are parkerized.

Isn't the "SS" a DCM thing?

Yes Clark. The 'serialization charts' had to be carefully calculated using the only available information namely the serial number ranges. and the number of rifles manufactured and shipped each month. An adjustment had to be made for scrapped receivers as well. The oother lists serve as a cross check but when you see a date thats out of sequence its almost certainly a replacement barrel.

For more information on how the serailization charts were created scroll up to the stick section and select the listing for the Remington Society of America.

    Regards,
    Jim

Is it correct to have all of the parts parkerized, or should some be blued?

Original M1903A3s had Parked barrels/receivers and most other parts were a blue/black. It has been said that those late M1903A3s may have had a few Parked parts. I don't recall which ones.
